The longest journeys begin with a single light year . . . Hammer's Slammer Don Slade is coming home to the planet Tethys, to his son and the woman he loves. But the space between is dark and cold. And the stars he must pass shine their light on planets which beckon to the weary traveller, planets which hold hidden dangers. And if Don Slade should ever reach Tethys, that's when the real fighting starts . . .… (mere)

The style and sci fi were okay, but the story itself was disjointed, essentially a bunch of strung together (very) short stories. Some had good ideas, but they were so short they really weren't developed more than thrown out there and then moved on from.

If you read online, Drake based the story on The Odyssey, which 1) is no excuse for a bad story and 2) not really what I'm looking for in sci fi; I want new stories with new ideas.

I stopped reading about 1/3 of the way through. ( )

Former Hammer's Slammer Captain Don Slade is heading home in this tale that loosely resembles The Odyssey, to take his place with one of the ruling families of Tethys, under siege by another family's tyrannical leader. Along the way, the former tanker officer gets unavoidably side-tracked on other planets and gets involved with local threats including Circe- and siren-like counterparts to the classic tale. And when he gets home, Slade still has to deal with a would-be dictator. Good book with some interesting obstacles and some military action. ( )
