Yes I did it. I really did. I'm also reading Dune I'll have you know! I think this book is bad but its also good. It reminds me of all those teen novels I read in my youth (I guess that makes me still in my youth because I still love reading this shit) but with the added 'going there' of sex. Too much of it if you ask me. But, from personal experience, I know that lots of ladies are not aware of the personal pleasures that they can enjoy through sex. I hope that this book will be a sexual awakening in a positive sense for, lets call them, maturing girls. We all deserve pleasure ladies! And just because our pleasure doesn't stick out of our pants or explode in a sticky mess doesn't mean we don't deserve it too.

Also this book had the least satisfying ending, perhaps ever. It made me want to read the next book, which I really don't want to do. But we'll see. ( )

Well, I succumbed to the propaganda and read Fifty Shades of Grey. I borrowed it from my library's eBook collection and I half read it and half skimmed it in three days. I can understand the hoopla over the sex in the book. When Christian Grey and Ana Steele have vanilla sex for the first time, it is enticing. He makes her feel as beautiful as a goodness and as sexy as Venus. Every one's first time should be so stellar and affirming. However, aside from their bedroom activities, the story seems boring. Ana's inner dialogue is irritating at best, or, maybe it is the writing. I swear if I read Ana describe her vagina as " there" one more time, I would've hurled my iPad. This story had potential to be darker & sexier. I wish it could have been tighter. At 484 pages, it really was just too long and redundant. ( )

***Warning: this whole review is nonsens. Beware***

So I was not going to read this because... because of all the negative reviews surrounding it. Thanks to the podcast The Worst Bestellers I did adjusted my opinion.

Because how they told it.. well it's not the best book but it's enjoyable for some and not worse than many other romance novels. Including the books I read when I was on my BDSM kick.

And I will never again say: 'It's stupid, you shouldn't read it!'.
Especially when I read harlequin books like they were going out of style. You gotta love hypocrisy and snobbery.

***Random tangents that has nothing to do with the book/story***
I read this in my eyes very good review: Navessa's review .

Which reminded me of the word 'problematic' (which has nothing to do with Navessa's review). I'm firmly in the camp that you can enjoy problematic stories. And that you shouldn't shame people for enjoying them. Also I don't like the word 'problematic'. I mean I am problematic. I'm so tolerant of stuff that I'm intolerant of not open minded people. It's a problem, but people still like me.

I'm not saying: 'Stop naming problematic things in stories!'. No, DO THAT! How else will people learn of other perspectives? But... and maybe I'm spending too much time on YouTube, but it seems the word 'problematic' is beginning to mean 'bad' as in 'do not enjoy this' instead of 'this story has triggering/wrong tropes/subjects/stereotypes elements'. --> not a good sentence, but this is a tangents anyway.

ALSO listen to the podcast. They are hilarious and critical.

What I liked about this book was the character of Christian Grey. He has a problem and through Anastasia he is beginning to solve it. I'm curious to know his secret and just for that I might read the next books. ( )

This review was originally posted on Once Upon a Chapter

I broke and finally read Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James. I wish I could say it blew me away but I'd be lying. I've been spoiled by authors who actually know how to write erotica. Had Fifty been my first introduction to the genre I could see how it would be impressive. But it wasn't and I wasn't. Hype my dears is what killed this book for me.

Can we talk about the writing please? I am by no means a literary snob, but the way James wrote made this book difficult to get through. It struck me as weird that she used the word besieged in two sentences back to back. I'm paraphrasing but first Clayton's was besieged and then the staff were besieged by customers. Perhaps if there were castle walls I could understand the enthusiasm for besieging but even then I'm thinking no. I'm here to tell you if I took a shot for every time Ana said or thought the word Jeez, I'd be dead. There would have been multiple bottles and alcohol poisoning. These are the things I notice when I read.

The other thing that really fell flat for me is the sex. You'd think with the amount of attention this received the sex was nothing short of miraculous. In fact it's pretty damn vanilla. Remember that "authors who do it better" line? Sarah McCarty and Olivia Cunning are two ladies who have set some pretty high standards in this genre for me. I've really enjoyed their work and the sex is like the scorching of the sun compared to the light bondage and spanking in Fifty Shades of Grey.

I will say that I giggled more than I anticipated and I really did enjoy some of the storyline. To be honest though the only reason I'm continuing with the series is because I'm curious about "the situation" and who needs to be found. I really couldn't care overly much about Ana and Christan at this point. I have the next two books so I'll finish the series out. ( )

“Fifty Shades of Grey” is being released in time for Valentine’s Day. That’s a bold move, since the film is not just unromantic but specifically anti-romantic; take your valentine along, by all means, but, be warned, it’ll be like watching “Rosemary’s Baby” at Christmas
