"Combining the rugged action of Labyrinth with the haunting mystery of Sepulchre, #1 bestselling author Kate Mosse's eagerly awaited Citadel is a mesmerizing World War II story of daring and courage, in which a group of determined women fighting for the French Resistance risk their lives to save their homeland and protect astonishing secrets buried in time in France, 1942. In Carcassonne, a colorful historic village nestled deep in the Pyrenees, a group of courageous women are engaged in a lethal battle. Like their ancestors who fought to protect their land from Northern invaders seven hundred years before, these members of the resistance--codenamed Citadel--fight to liberate their home from the Nazis. But smuggling refugees over the mountains into neutral territory and sabotaging their German occupiers at every opportunity is only part of their mission. These women must also protect an ancient secret that, if discovered by their ruthless enemies, could change the course of history.A superb blend of rugged action and haunting mystery, Citadel is a vivid and richly atmospheric story of love, faith, heroism, and danger--and a group of extraordinary women who dare the impossible to survive"--… (mere)

The conclusion of an amazing trilogy. The final pages were hard to read through the tears. It took me over a week to read, the price of being a dad. Everything Kate Mosse has written I've read or soon will. Many authors create a single character & ride that one character to the end, mot Mosse. In each of the 3 books of the Languedoc Trilogy she creates memorable characters that you get wrapped up & invested in. As much as her characters this is a complicated story that's rich in historical detail as are all her books. If you like Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series you'll love these.

I enjoyed this novel by Kate Mosse more than Labyrith and Sepulchre, the previous two set around Carcassone, although the book does stand alone. Even though I was prepared for a sad ending I was weeping by the end. The book made me realise how little I know about the history of this part of France during the Second World War and it was certainly a faulous setting for a thrilling adventure story with a strong sense of place. I could smell the herbs and feel the warmth of the sun and it brightened up a British winter. I liked the Carcassonne walking tour at the end and the map of the city. This is a book about a group of young people with strong bonds and about love facing evil.and an excellent read. ( )

This book hooked me completely. I was reading it at bedtime and it was frequently a challenge to put it down to go to sleep. There are some connections to the previous books in Mosse's Languedoc series, but the main story follows Sandrine in Carcassone in 1942 and 1944, first how she gets involved in the resistance and then the end of the two years of success in that task. Alongside, a 4th century man hides a religious text deemed heretical so it wouldn't be lost entirely, and which becomes important in the other strand of the story too. ( )

I have read all of Mosse's works of fiction now, and have loved all of them. This third in the Languedoc trilogy, and it hasn't disappointed. Whilst there is the hint of the supernatural about the story, it is only an aside - a driver for the Authie subplot. The characters are, as always, well rounded and you see them grow as people as the story develops. You don't have to read the trilogy in order as they are stand alone books, but reading them helps understand the mentions of Baillard and Anais in the text. ( )
