read it because I liked the t.v. show. Good sci-fi. What was most interesting though was how they adapted it to "spice" it up for t.v.

Second review:
Still a fantastic read. Some of the magic was gone, but a fantastic ride.

First review:
Wow...I loved this book. I was originally interested in it because of the show, but aside from a similar plot line, it was much different (thought stopped watching half way through the only season). This book was perfect for me because it explained the science at a reasonable level and had extremely compelling philosophical discussions throughout the narrative. I will say, no, this book isn't for everyone. Some may even hate it. However, as I stated before, this book was the perfect combination of science and narrative for me. ( )

Robert Sawyer always finds great stories to write about. His ideas always draw me in and I think I'm in for a fantastic tale. Then I reach the end and I feel like it could have been more.

Flashforward had a great pull - See your own life 20 years into the future for 2 minutes and try to work out how to get there.

It was a brilliant start and a real page turner. I loved reading about everyone's flashforward, I was riveted by all the connotations that flashforward threw up. Even the loss and devastation caused by the flashforward made for interesting reading...The first half is about the here and now. It's great.

When we reach the second half, it's all about edging towards the 20 year future that had been predicted. Getting there takes a lot of technical info that frankly I could have done without. The why's and how's don't really interest me. Also the two leads at this stage become a bit whiny. Lloyd Simcoe wants to be with his girl, then he's got doubts, then he's sure again, then he has doubts again....and Theo is so wrapped up in himself that he gets tedious really fast. It's all Me, Me, Me with Theo. THEN we get to the future and it's all wrapped up in a paragraph or 3. It was a bit of a let down.

The ending left me with a bit of a 'whaaat??' moment and I imagine for the hard-core sci-fi fans it was the best bit, but I just wasn't feeling it. The conclusion was over in a flash.

.....And it's nothing like the tv show...... just sayin' ( )

Title: Flashforward

Author: Robert Sawyer

Publication Date: Apr 2000

Genre: Sci-Fi

Score: 2/5

Two stars for the premise and this novel has a great premise: when the CERN supercollider initiates a new program, everyone in the world gets a glimpse of their future. This is the second time I’ve attempted this book and, once again, I had to DNF at around 25%. As soon as Theo starts trying to solve his future murder, the story bogs down. Not recommended.

The story of the book is focused on the implications of a strange result of a physics experiment (projecting the consciousness 20 years in the future for a period of two minutes). Without going in the details on how such thing might work, it presents several characters thoughts and actions in a compelling way. Philosophically it supports the idea that free will is possible, but shows that does not imply that things change significantly for everybody involved. The ending is nice as it leaves some open questions (what did Simcoe choose? What will happened with Theo and Miciko? etc.) which fits the general direction of the book to not force one solution or another. ( )

Although uneven, the book was a more rewarding experience for me than the television series. If you enjoyed FlashForward on television, you should probably read the book as it delves far more deeply into many of the issues raised by its core concept.

For Richard M. Gotlib

Richard and I first met in high school in 1975. Back then, we each envisioned very different futures for ourselves. But one thing seemed absolutely clear: no matter how many years would pass, we'd always be friends. It's now a quarter-century later, and I'm delighted that at least that part turned out exactly as planned.
