“Cowardice Court” is an upbeat novella set somewhere in America’s mountains. Featuring a cast of English and Americans, this is George Barr McCutcheon in fast-paced humorous mode.

The simple yet superb plot revolves around two near neighbours that have strict boundaries on their land. To walk past a certain log, for example, means one party or the other is trespassing. In fact, the novella could as easily have been called “The Trespassers”, but “Cowardice Court” has a better ring to it.

Not surprisingly, an attraction is formed between a female in one rival camp and a male in the other.

At times this reminds me of a P. G. Wodehouse tale, yet at the time that this work was first published – 1906 – Mr Wodehouse was yet to develop into the writer he became, as at this point in his career he mainly focused on school stories, so one wonders if he was influenced by Mr McCutcheon.

A good and quick read, this one. ( )

"He's just an infernal dude, your lordship, and I'll throw him in the river if he says a word too much."
"He has already said too much, Tompkins, confound him, don't you know."
"Then I'm to throw him in whether he says anything or not, sir?"
"Have you seen him?"
"No, your lordship, but James has, James says he wears a red coat and --"
"Never mind, Tompkins. He has no right to fish on this side of that log. The insufferable ass may own the land on the opposite side, but, confound his impertinence, I own it on this side."
