Fiction. Romance. HTML:

You can always come home. Second chances come a little harder.

Chase and Zoe were the high school golden couple. Football captain, cheerleader, prom royalty. After graduation, though, Chase couldn't resist the urge to experience life outside their small town. He didn't exactly expect Zoe to wait twelve years for him, but now that he's back, he finds some small part of him hoping she did.

It's no big surprise she's married. The kick in the face is she married his best friend.

Zoe was devastated when Chase left, but she's filed those bittersweet memories under "Moved On". She loves her life, and loves her husband. She has all she needs. And Chase keeps an honorable distance.

One cold, wet, miserable day, tragedy turns Zoe's world upside down. Chase never expected her to simply fall into his arms, but a man can dream. Except his dream doesn't include the fact that this time, she's the one hitting the road...and he's the one left behind.

Warning: This story contains heartbreak, heartache and one last chance for two lovers to find each other.

Quick & Dirty: A short story of love and loss and the potential to love again.

Opening Sentence: “Chase’s back in town.”

The Review:

A Forever Kind of Love is a short contemporary romance story. It is all about the human heart and its infinite capacity for love, old and new. It is about a man ready to claim the woman he has always loved, and finds out that she has moved on and married his best friend. And most importantly, it is about second chances.

Chase ran away from his hometown when he was 18 years-old; leaving his home, his father, and his girlfriend Zoe. After a 15-year hiatus, Chase returns to the small town of Warren, looking for what he so casually threw away in his youth; a home. Chase’s character is complex. Though he knows that Zoe is married and his main reason for coming home is gone, he still tries to make life in a small town work. Chase feels like he lost his chance at love, yet despite that, he still tries to be a friend to both Zoe and her husband, Roger. He is supportive and caring, even as he envies his friend’s life. And when Roger’s illness threatens to do harm to the woman they both love, Chase steps up and helps keep them both stay safe. I like his willingness to accept that the love he feels for Zoe may never be returned. It’s cool that he continues to care for her, even though she has made it very clear that her heart now belongs to her husband.

Zoe has had rough times in her past. He mother despises her and the one man she thought would always be there for her left. In the aftermath, Zoe’s acceptance of Roger’s proposal turned out to be one of the best things to ever happen to her. Love followed after a time and Zoe thought that that would be the end of it. Not until Chase’s return and the devastating news of her husband’s health did she realize that not all things are as simple as she would have them.

The idea of love is a complex one. A person can love multiple people in many different ways. When love is given a room is made inside the heart, whether or not they stay matters little; once touched, the heart remembers. To say that you can only have one love in life is a fallacy. Zoe loves her husband, but that does not negate the love she once cherished with Chase. Roger loves his wife, but realizes that in order for Zoe to be happy, she has to keep living after he’s gone; that includes loving someone else. Chase has always loved Zoe but was willing to set aside his feelings for her happiness.

This is a wonderful contemporary romance story. The feelings it invokes are heartwarming laced with sadness and loss. A Forever Kind of Love’s theme is just that; love that lasts forever, whether the person is still here or not.

Notable Scene:

“Chase, hi.”

Forcing himself to smile, he ld out the bag. “Hey. Wanted to bring this by. And I promised my dad I’d come by and check on things.”

She might have barred him from coming in but he edged past her, forcing her to back up unless she wanted him brushing up against her. Which she didn’t – Chase was fully aware of the extreme care she took not to let him touch her. The door closed behind them and he turned to study Zoe’s face.

She looked tired.

Still so fucking beautiful it made his heart ache just to look at her, but tired. Like she could sleep for a week.

Tired and frazzled and frustrated.

He felt like a major prick because he wanted to offer to hold her for the entire week.

Her husband’s dying, man. Remember him? Guy used to be your best friend? Still is your friend.

“How are you?” he asked.

“I’m fine.” She gave him a practiced, completely false smile.

“Bullshit.” He dropped the bag on the table centered under a mirror and folded his arms over his chest, studying her face. “Don’t hand me the line you hand people in your store, people at church, whoever. I know you too well. How are you, really?”

She lifted a golden brow at him. “Chase, you don’t really know me that well. Not anymore.”

“Don’t I?”

UPDATE I read Forever Kind of Love and really enjoyed it, it did make me cry quite a bit. The only reason I am not giving it a 4 is because I wish there would have been more emphasis on Chase and Zoe's actual relationship. It was mainly about Roger's illness. I would've loved to have seen how Chase & Zoe evovled. It was all rather rushed at the end. org post Based on a review I read I have a feeling this is going to be one, like The Reluctant Dom (without the BDSM) where I am going to have to be in the mood to read a tearjerker and will have to have a couple of light books ready to read after it. ( )

This book was an AWESOME read!

Not wanting to give anything away I'll just say this, from the first chapter to the end, you will not want to put the book down. You will feel everything that Zoe, Chase, and Roger are going through. Emotions just pour from the pages and soon you find yourself feeling angry, sad, hurt, and love(not necessarily in that order). Grab your favorite drink, a box of tissue and dive into a wonderful story. ( )

This review was edited from the original posted on my blog.

Once again Shiloh Walker has managed to write a story that is like a punch to the solar plexus. She has an amazing talent for writing characters that are damaged or in need of a second chance. And she manages to write them without them becoming trite, one dimensional and unrealistic.

This story was a little personal for me, I identified with Zoe and some of the things she goes through, so on my first read, I was crying like a baby half way through. But this is something that
I've come to expect from some of Shiloh's books, (in particular - No Longer Mine, Always Yours, Beautiful Girl, The Missing, Tempt Me).

Some ladies may hate Chase for leaving Zoe, but while he was a dick the way he went about leaving, I don't think the story would've been the same if he didn't - well duh! Let me rephrase - Chase as a character, wouldn't have been the same. I don't think he could've been the rock that he is if he'd stayed. I also like that we met Chase first, that we got to hear his side, because once we're introduced to Zoe, there is more of a focus on her and what she's going through and what Chase is feeling for her.

I haven't spoken about Roger, mainly because I didn't like him. I know he's going through stuff, but he seems like an arse - I'm not sure if that was Walker's intention, I certainly felt sympathy for the character - but beyond that, I didn't pay much attention. This could also be because for Chase and Zoe to have their HEA he needs to be out of the picture.

I love that Zoe chooses to go away, for me it made sense, both as a way for her to heal and as a way for Chase to understand what Zoe would've felt when he left. But damned if that whole scene isn't bittersweet and full of sexy pain. Again, it didn't seem hoky, it was natural.

And then after the emotional rollercoaster, there's the squee. Oh yes there's the SQUEE :) I love Walker's consummation scenes, they're just so damn hawt! This is light on in terms of the sexin', so if you're expecting it to be like some of her other titles, unexpect and keep reading, it's worth it. This is more a story of reconnecting, of second chances and while the sexin' is part of that, it's not the whole story.

The only part I didn't love of this book was the ending - in that, I felt it ended too soon. I felt kinda cheated, I wanted more dammit! Yes, there was a HEA, but I wanted more of Zoe and Chase once they'd resolved their issues, I wanted to experience their HEA. Which in part is because of the great writing, you're invested in the characters, you want something good to happen, and you want to be there when it happens.

So it's a hells yes from me, this was sexy, it was sad and just a little bit redemptive - but most importantly - it's what I've come to love about Shiloh Walker's stories, it's a beautiful, so real it hurts romance, with a sexy as hell hero and a stronger than she thinks she is leading lady. ( )
