In my opinion, this is a good book. I liked it for three reasons. First of all, the book includes organized figures for the reader to understand. When the text states, “Foster families take care of children whose parents cannot”, there is a picture of a family in which each person is labeled with a describing word and an arrow pointing to the person. For example, the father has the word foster father written above his head and an arrow pointing to him. The detail of the words and arrows pointing to the pictures helps the young reader understand the text in an easier manner and learn what each person in a foster family looks like. Next, the illustrations in the book enhance the story. One page of the book depicts two young girls wearing hats, sunglasses, and boas when they dress up as the text states, “Foster family members have fun together. Linda and her foster sister play dress up.” The pictures in the book support what is being said within the text for even the youngest reader to understand what is happening in the book. Also, the book incorporates a clear table of glossary terms for the reader to understand the story with ease. When the text states, “Some foster families adopt their foster children”, there is a table defining the word adopt as “to make a child a legal member of a family.” The in-depth defining and explanation of words found in the tables allow the reader to focus on comprehension rather than decoding words for meaning. Overall, the main idea of the book is to teach young readers that foster families are a type of family that do exist and allow children to be put into good homes. This book is designed to explain what a foster family is, how it works, and why children live in them in order for the reader to be aware and accepting of different family structures. ( )
