ullmann/Tandem have started a wonderful and inexpensive competitor series to the Taschen Art books. At nearly A4, they are much larger than the compact Taschen. A large number of high-quality colour illustrations give a good survey of an artist's oeuvre without breaking anyone's wrist or budget. The competent, if a bit dated text is set in a minuscule but still legible 8 point script. The quality of the colour prints is excellent.

The volume under discussion deals with Sandro Botticelli whose work have a surprisingly modern art deco look. His specialty were animated female faces starting with a number of lifelike Madonna portraits to the Primavera and the Birth of Venus. His feet and toes on the other hand always look a bit strange (think Uma Thurman in Kill Bill). Recommended. ( )
