I have no doubt Lewin is a fantastic teacher. The anecdotes about his life were quite interesting as were the stories of how he teaches. But he covers way too much ground in this short book so the explanations are rushed and often unclear. If I knew nothing about physics, I dont think I would be able to follow at all. I think I’ll watch his online classes because I didn’t come away Learning a lot of new stuff from this book. ( )

Good book but gets boring when the author depicts about his research activities. Finally takes his grip back trough the last chapter ( )

Unbedingt lesen!

Ansonsten unbedingte Leseempfehlung ( )

Though I didn't quite gain the understanding that I'd expected, I love Lewin's passion and perspective, and he opened my eyes to a lot of gems we overlook in everyday life. ( )

As happens with many senior scientists who wish to, or are asked to, write a book, this is somewhat of a hodge-podge of different things. The book has a few intriguing memoir sections. Lewin grew up in fear and hardship in Holland during the Nazi occupation with a Jewish parent. After his Phd in Holland he later came to the States and MIT as a young scientist. Building up his career, he largely focused on x-ray detectors, launched high up via giant balloons. These are all fascinating reads, and give a good window into the mind of a vibrant character.

The book also includes some of the best popular science writing on physics more generally, inspired by his wildly popular physics lecture courses (online until very recently). These will be a little tedious for anyone (like me) who has gone through his excellent lectures already, but for anyone without this treat of an experience, the explanations for wondrous events like rainbows are crystal clear, inspiring and passionate.

The main final section relates Lewin's own career into astronomical x-ray sources. This personally was my favourite section, as it describes real science from a scientist's point of view, with the sequence of mysteries, the personality clashes, the technical solutions, the speculations and so on. That the topic is neutron stars just amplifies the interest, because neutron stars must be one of the most extreme and fascinating objects in the universe. As Lewin describes, neutron stars have many times more mass than our sun, but are only 10 miles across, so if you take just a teaspoon of neutron star matter, bring it to earth and it would weigh 100 million tons! Mind-boggling!

I'm never a big fan of such a mix of topics in a book, and this one too suffers from those split aims as well. But the clarity and enthusiasm that Lewin writes about physics manages to turn this into a minor issue. It is definitely a great introduction to physics, and even has something for those who have watched his lectures, though is even more thoroughly recommended for those who haven't. ( )
