When her father loses his job, Sarah and her family may have to leave the wonderful house they rent from Great-Aunt Margaret, who is in an assisted living home. But wait! Great-Aunt Margaret conveniently is well enough to move into her own home again, as long as she has some help with living tasks. I was shocked how the story glosses over the amount of help she'd need, when it turns out she's fully dependent upon a wheelchair yet insists upon moving into her old room on the second floor Nobody has to install a chairlift, widen doorways, or revamp the washroom. And the amount of lifting that Sarah's mother must have to do is pretty much ignored after Dad carries her upstairs. Sarah's giving up "her" room and moving into the box room is another convenient plot point to create some antagonism and dramatic tension. When, along with the old lady, a ghost moves in, Sarah and Margaret are the only ones who are haunted and this gives them a chance to bond and provides the best moments in the book. I really liked the book at this point, but the denouement left me less satisfied: spoilers follow.

There's a trite story from Margaret's past, the ghost does not have unfinished business but is a purely malevolent spirit on a mission of unjust revenge. I'm not fond of that concept. In the end they're rescued by another ghost. I'm not fond of the deus-ex-machina either. ( )

A good book about a ghost wrecking havoc for a young girl and her great-aunt. They have to bond together to protect each other from the ghost, who wants revenge. ( )
