While good intentioned, this book is helpful for a narrow lens of teachers. The most helpful part of the book is the ideas around important behaviors a floating teacher needs to succeed. In other areas typically only one way of doing something (such as organizing) was offered and often these didn't pertain to many teaching positions.

I found The Floating Teacher to be quite a good book. I am not a teacher, but several of my family members and closest friends teach school, mostly middle and high school. I like learning about teaching ideas, habits, and problems so I can more fully understand their work! I discussed the material presented with two of them and they thought that it had merit.

The tips are useful and she presents a good attitude about making the best of a frustrating teaching situation.

I thought that this book was okay. Some information was helpful. I found the blurb on the categorization of teachers amusing. Other than that, a lot of the book was common sense. After reading this, I didn't feel any more informed as I did before reading it. ( )

This is my 5th year as a floating teacher at my school, and I was looking forward to picking up some tips and tricks from another experienced floating teacher; however, a lot of the information in this book seemed crazy to me. For example, a floating teacher is supposed to carry around boxes of tissues, hand sanitizer, staplers, dry erase markers, etc. so as not to use the home teacher's supplies. Ummmm...I think not! A room and/or it's supplies are not the property of the home teacher; they are the property of the school. In addition, a home teacher has no inherent "right" to her room. That room is mine for 42 minutes and I expect all of my home teachers to respect that. Randall also advises readers to carry their lunch with them in case they can't get back to the cafeteria to eat. On what kind of campus does this woman work? I work in a regular high school building; If I can't make it to the cafeteria for lunch, there's something seriously wrong. I guess, in the end, I just found most of her suggestions either too obvious or too outlandish. There seemed to be no practical advice from which I could benefit. ( )

I liked the e-book format for this book. As a "floating teacher" of 3 years I found some of the suggestions in this book interesting ideas to try. Many of the ideas in the book make sense (walking the path before they students are there and meeting with each "home teacher"). Would have been an excellent resource to have 3 years ago! ( )
