"Poems on Liberty: Reflections for Belarus" is an anthology of original poems broadcast on Radio Liberty in 2001. The music of Giuseppe Verdi accompanied the voices of authors and translators as, each evening for 365 consecutive days, they wove into verse their unique and very personal insights into the meaning of liberty at the dawn of the 21st century. Poets from Belarus and five continents, ranging in age from 10 to 92, among them Nobel prize winners and artists forced into exile, submitted their works for broadcast. This anthology consists of 122 selected poems from the original broadcasts. The Images Swarm Free includes works by Maksim Bahdanovich, Zmitrok Biadulia, and Ales Harun, that were absent from Vera Rich's groundbreaking 1971 volume of translated Belarusian poetry, Like Water, Like Fire, probably because of editorial control by the Byelorussian Soviet authorities. Both books can be difficult to find now, although Like Water, Like Fire is more likely to have found a home in libraries. It seems appropriate, bearing in mind the circumstances surrounding these publications, that I read partial samizdat copies of both works - both good copies but with some updating of, for example, the transliteration of authors' names into the latin alphabet. Obviously I can only review what I read. (
