With Dark harbor, Stuart Woods proved yet again that he is the master of the popular crime novel. Now he outdoes himself with the newest addition to the series. Stone Barrington embarks on his most dangerous adventure yet when he takes on a job as a lawyer for a sleazy and clueless con man--and ends up getting embroiled in the underworld of the New York mafia. It started out as just another late night at Elaine's, where Stone was eating a porterhouse steak and enjoying the company of his friends. But when Herbie Fisher, a notoriously not-so-sharp swindler, walked in, the pleasant atmosphere turned to ice. Herbie convinces Bill Eggers, the managing partner of Woodman & Weld, to sign him on as a client--with the goal of taking down the infamous mafia boss Carmine Datilla. And even though Stone doesn't want to have anything to do with Herbie--or the mafia, for that matter--he is soon coerced into being Herbie's lawyer.… (mere)

What can I say, this is one entertaining series. My first Stuart Woods novel, and I'm hooked to Tony Roberts reading the audio version. ( )

Stone embarks on his most dangerous adventure yet when a chance encounter with the wrong man sends him straight into the heart of New York's Mafia underworld. It starts as just another late night at Elaine's and ends with Stone forced to deal, yet again, the the hapless Herbie Fisher, the bane of his existence. Stone finds that what should have been a throwaway case instead leads right to a powerful mob boss with a notoriously bad temper and long reach. Fortunately for Stone, the twists of the case also take a more congenial turn - sending a little romance his way, and giving him another opportunity to try to rescue a beautiful woman in distress. Herbie Fisher, a new character, decides to sue a Mafia biggie who has had him roughed up over a past-due gambling debt. Stone Barrington gets the case since he is "of counsel" to big time law firm Woodman and Weld. In this instance, "of counsel" means getting the cases the firm wants keep at arm's length. This puts Stone is up against Carmine Dattila. Everyone presumes that Herbie Fisher will soon be dead because he sued the mob boss. As soon as Stone becomes more than minimally involved, odds are taken that he will wind up dead as well. And Herbie, poor Herbie. Every 50 or so pages, another attempt in made on Herbie's life.

Good book, entertaining read. Maybe I've just read too many Stone Barrington stories, but this one made Stone into a superman, and everything was a little too coincidental and convenient. For this, I give the book 4 stars, not the usual 5. ( )

After 13 Stone Barrington novels, it's pretty much a certainty that Stone's gonna get laid and that...wait for it...his lover is going to be bumped off. Yep, happened here too. Accordingly, the sleazy client makes it through the entire book, alive. Dino plays a great role and the story comes together right at the end. The law firm makes money off the opponent attorney's divorce. Only in a Stuart Woods novel. Next? ( )

Herbie convinces Bill Eggers, the managing partner of Woodman & Weld, to sign him on as a client-with the goal of taking down the infamous mafia boss Carmine Datilla. And even though Stone doesn't want to have anything to do with Herbie-or the mafia, for that matter-he is soon coerced into being Herbie's lawyer.

With the help of his ex-partner, Dino, Stone investigates "Datilla the Hun," and the rest of the mob family, encountering intrigue and danger at every turn. Will Stone finally take a stand, or will he end up at the bottom of Sheepshead Bay?

With the swift action, razor-sharp characters, and crackling dialogue that are Stuart Woods's hallmarks, Fresh Disasters is Woods at the very height of his storytelling powers. ( )
