The well-written but badly plotted final volume of Ms Hunter's "Rarest Blooms" quartet.

Perhaps I should have read the first three novels before attempting [b:Dangerous in Diamonds|9211153|Dangerous in Diamonds (The Rarest Blooms, #4)|Madeline Hunter|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1311281528s/9211153.jpg|14090868], which contains a plethora of distracting two-dimensional characters. No doubt their stories are detailed in earlier volumes.

The first few chapters were thoroughly enjoyable, presenting the pieces of a complex puzzle with the promise of an intriguing mystery. The advent of Latham, the villain of the story, presaged a climactic over-the-top confrontation at the end. The climax, when it came, proved to be weak and disappointing, all the more for the earlier intimations of his ruthless and amoral political ambitions.

Just when the story began to flag, the long and vivid description of political unrest in the North of England and the Peterloo massacre reignited and reinforced the social and political dimension to the story but this, too, fizzled out.

Against this background, the sitting-room confrontation between the villain and his victims, clumsily introduced and feebly executed, was a major let-down.

I enjoyed this book and am a big fan of Madeline Hunter in general. I listened to the audio version of this book and while I generally prefer audio books, I was not a fan of the person who read this novel.

I think the romance is well written, and there were absolutely fun plot twists and surprises. It's an easy read and a good book.
