My mother bought me this in flurry of "Halloween" books. I did enjoy it, and felt no matter how correct its details were, it did make me think about living with mental disabilities as well as physical. I remember fighting to figure out just who the killer was etc. It wasn't a bad book, but as murder mysteries aren't really my thing, it wasn't on my to-read-again list. ( )

Kudos for Cammie McGovern for writing a book that includes an autistic child. Adams character is really well written and very interesting to read. Cara, Adam's mom is a single mom with no friends, no family, and no support network. She and her son are soon in the middle of a horrific murder which involves Adam and several of his classmates and a few older students. Many of the kids have disabilities which I thought made the story a bit much. Then the bullying factor is added and I just thought too many childhood issues were being thrown together. The author has an autistic child so her representation of Adam is really well written. I thought some of the parts where Kevin is in the woods to be a bit confusing. A bit too much mixed into one story for my taste, but some great characters are represented. ( )

This was a really good book. The story was told from the perspective of many characters which gave it a lot of depth. The mystery was intriguing and held my interest until the end. Highly recommend. ( )

Cara, a single mother of a 9-year-old autistic son Adam, has painstakingly worked with her child since his birth to learn to speak in full sentences, focus on the task at hand and, most of all, to make eye contact. When Cara recieves a phone call from Adam's school informing her that he and a classmate, Amelia, have gone missing from recess she is not initially alarmed because Adam has a history of wandering away when he hears sounds that intrigue him. She believes that he will be found nearby the schoolyard and that proves to be the case. Unfortunately he is found next to the body of Amelia who appears to have been stabbed to death. Adam unsurprisingly regresses from the shock and Cara is at a loss on how to help her child or how to have Adam help the police investigation. A junior high boy, Morgan, forms a bond with Adam that is both sweet and suspect as Morgan has his own ulterior motives. Morgan has done something criminal and he wants to help solve Amelia's murder investigation so that he will be seen as a hero to deflect attention from his own crime.

Adam is a sweet character and as the author is the mother of her own autistic child Adam's behavior seems right on the mark. I'm not sure I liked Cara very much because she seems rather self-centered and easily manipulates others. Most of the story deals with Cara's background and her relationships with her best friend Suzette and a handicapped classmate named Kevin. Although both Kevin and Suzette have their own emotional issues Cara seems to only focus on what they can do for her. The mystery aspect of the story is a bit convoluted and the reveal is surprising. It was an interesting story and I would probably read another by this author
