Porcupette's loving mother suddenly did not return from the outside world leaving the baby porcupine alone and frightened. The little one left her home and wandered into a cave where a mama bear was feeding her cubs and became part of the family. As the little one became more confused and certain that the bears would leave her alone, she became angry and that led to quill injuries to mama bear. But mama loves her just the same, as is true in adoptive families everywhere regardless of reason for being suddenly orphaned. The illustrations are simple and moving. What an amazing story for children to understand Adoption as well as unconditional love. In this story, Porcupette's mom does not come home one day after foraging for food. Porcupette does not know what to do, but she decides to go and look for her. He comes upon a bear family and is so hungry that he sneaks in and lies down between the two cubs and starts to feed. His new life has begun. Porcupette is always worried that mama bear will realize that he is not hers and kick him out. He gets scared and "prickly". He tries to figure out what she did wrong to make her "real" mom abandon him. It is heartbreaking. When his new siblings get mad at him for being so prickly and hurting mama bear, he leaves and goes back to his old home under a rock ledge. Mama bear comes and retrieves him and takes him back to the cave. Porcupette is finally secure in the knowledge that he has a new family and is loved. A beautifully illustrated story that is easy for children to understand. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Porcupette Finds a Family is a sweet children's book about a young porcupine (called a porcupette) who is on its own when it's mother never returns home from looking for food. Tired, hungry, and increasingly frightened it goes out searching for its mother and finds a nursing bear with her two cubs. Over the course of the book the porcupette comes to find a new, adopted family and learns that its OK to feel loved. This book was incredibly moving, and dealt with the complex subject of adoption in a way that I feel any child would understand. There's a shocking amount of depth to the book, and the emotions that the porcupette goes through are all too common among children in a new adopted family. When the poor little porcupette put its quills up to see if it would still be loved after hurting its newfound siblings my heart ached. The happy ending, of finding acceptance even through that scared hurt, was heartwarming in the best way. This is an awesome book, and I'm glad I had a chance to read it. One day Porcupette's mom goes out for food and never comes home (I hate that this is never resolved) so Porcupette finds a new family with a mama bear and her cubs. I could see reading this to an adopted or step-child, about how your new family loves you and cares about you, even when you're "prickly" and hurt them because you're scared. It has a great message, though at times it's a little heavy-handed. The illustrations are also lovely and fun. Porcupette Finds a Family would be a good read for adopted kids, foster kids, and any kids who feel like they just don't belong in their families.
