(3.53) | 10 | When Mrs Bradley's grandson finds an old diary in her rented cottage it attracts the interest of this most unconventional of detectives, for the book's now deceased owner was once suspected of the murders of both her aunt and cousin. Does the missing diary finally reveal what happened to old Aunt Flora? Is the case of Bella Foxley really closed? TO WANTONS
But fools do live, and waste their little light,
And seek with pain their ever-during night.
Campion
He that one sin in conscience keeps
When he to quiet goes,
More venturous is than he that sleeps
With twenty mortal foes.
Anonymous
Three things there be that prosper all apace,
And flourish while they are asunder far;
But on a day, they meet all in a place,
And when they meet, they one another mar.
And they be these: the Wood, the Weed, the Wag:
The Wood is that that makes the gallows tree;
The Weed is that that strings the hangman's bag;
The Wag, my pretty knave, betokens thee.

YOU, AMERICAN READER,
whoever you are, affectionately
I am a Londoner. Proud, too, of it. Whilst this book was being written, the Jerries made rings round it. They picked off seven houses, a railway bridge, and a block of flats. We put the Union Jack up on all these sites. Then they wiped out shops, factories, and the main road. They they dropped high explosive in the garden six doors away. Still, here is the book.
