"At the heart of this simple book lies the key to many of the struggles we face these days, from being productive and achieving our goals, to getting healthy and fit in the face of fast food and inactivity, to finding simplicity and peace amidst chaos and confusion. That key itself is simple: focus. Our ability to focus will allow us to create in ways that perhaps we haven't in years. It'll allow us to slow down and find peace of mind. It'll allow us to simplify and focus on the essential things, the things that matter most." --Leo Babauta… (mere)

Finished the free edition of Focus [1] by Leo Babauta (2/5). Leo writes Zen Habits[2] a blog about simplicity and creativity for those of us living in this modern, hectic world. The blog is great, and I dip into it from time to time when I need a refresher on simplicity.

The book has all of the merits of the blog: the content is clear and concise, the writing good, and the advice useful without being accusing. However, while the style and the content are both good, the chapters read as lengthy blog posts rather than a book -- information is repeated across chapters, and there is no overarching narrative thread. (That said, it seems like a lot of books from traditional publishers have that sort of feel these days.)

Focus wasn't a great book, but it was a good reminder of techniques for achieving greater focus and creativity.

A good study on habits for helping focus. It gets a tad repetitive in places and much of the suggestions are well known - however, it's strong point is in collating these things and evaluating what works - at least for the author. I feel like I did get a lot from it and look forward to applying the principles to my life. ( )

Leo Babauta — автор «Zen to Done» и «Zen habits».

From the founder of Zen habits, this book lives up to the cover. It's simple, which means it reads fast enough that even before you implement the principles, you DO have the time to read it. Already on the journey, I still took away several valuable nuggets that made this well worth the short time it requires. ( )

This book is dedicated to my grandfather, Joe Murphy, who lived a life that inspired me, and whose death has left a gap in my life ... and to my grandmother, Marianne Murphy, who I love deeply and whose strength and kindness have always pointed the way for me.
