This book is compiled of different stories from the perspective of Nate Wright, who is a mischievous troublemaker who is currently in sixth grade. This would be a good read for those who are in upper elementary school. This would also be a great book for those who may be second language learners or reluctant readers. ( )

Big Nate is a good graphic novel for tweens and middle schoolers. The comical novel follows the different situations that Nate puts himself in. It is a good way for middle schoolers to relate to a story. They are short comics much like the sunday newspaper has. ( )

One of my students caught me reading this and they were SOOO excited to see a teacher reading the same stuff THEY read. So, I decided to take the opportunity to ask a few students why they enjoy Big Nate. I was met with blank stares. "Well...ummmm..."
Me: If you don't like it, why do you read it?
Her: Because it's fast. We get more points for more books, so we can get quick points.
Her fellow students: *nods and murmurs of agreement*

Ah. That makes so much sense. ( )

My introduction to Nate Wright was the "In a Class By Himself" chapter book. At that time, I did not know he first appeared as a comic series. This book is a collection of strips which appeared from August 2006 through April 2007. Funny and good supplemental reading, if you are a Big Nate fan.
Calvin and Hobbs are the benchmark for me. These comics are Calvin and Hobbs without Calvin's imagination nor his crazy parents. While Nate's father has his moments, he pales in comparison to Calvin's father, the camping enthusiast. ( )
