Discworld's pesky alchemists are up to their old tricks again. This time, they've discovered how to get gold from silver -- the silver screen that is. Hearing the siren call of Holy Wood is one Victor Tugelbend, a would-be wizard turned extra. He can't sing, he can't dance, but he can handle a sword (sort of), and now he wants to be a star. So does Theda Withel, an ambitious ingénue from a little town (where else?) you've probably never heard of. But the click click of moving pictures isn't just stirring up dreams inside Discworld. Holy Wood's magic is drifting out into the boundaries of the universes, where raw realities, the could-have-beens, the might-bes, the never-weres, the wild ideas are beginning to ferment into a really stinky brew. It's up to Victor and Gaspode the Wonder Dog (a star if ever one was born!) to rein in the chaos and bring order back to a starstruck Discworld. And they're definitely not ready for their close-up!… (mere)

Although I enjoyed this book, I did get a slight feeling that some of it went over my head. ( )

Muahahah....

"Davvero?"
"Era solo un teschio".
"Di chi?"
"Non l'ha detto" rispose Gaspode

I think I found out how I can read all of the Discworld books without getting tired of them. I have a stack of unread books, primarily nonfiction, and I'm switching between that pile and the Discworld novels. This may have allowed me to approach this book from a different perspective compared to the previous times I read it. This is also the first time I've been back to the books since he died and that has altered how I read the books.

Previously this book wasn't one of my favorites. It was probably on the bottom of the list with "Pyramids" (I've since revised my opinion of that one, too). There are very few regular Discworld characters in it and even the one who gets a lot of time, Dibbler, isn't one of my favorites. I mean I like him but normally as a quick take. Now I realize he was a perfect fit for this book.

While this isn't my favorite Discworld book, it this is such an incredible send-up of the motion picture industry that I had to give it 5 stars. Who else could combine scenes from "King Kong" and "Attack of the 50 Foot Woman" in this way? Pratchett really worked hard to include not only movie scenes but send-ups of studios and people. ( )

She wasn't certain what the future held, but coffee would be involved if she had any say in the matter.
Most alchemists were nervous, in any case; it came from not knowing what the crucible of bubbling stuff they were experimenting with was going to do next.
Reality is not digital, an on-off state, but analog. Something gradual. In other words, reality is a quality that things possess in the same way that they possess, say, weight. Some people are more real than others, for example. It has been estimated that there are only about five hundred real people on any given planet, which is why they keep unexpectedly running into one another all the time.
The Discworld is as unreal as it is possible to be while still being just real enough to exist.
The universe contains any amount of horrible ways to be woken up, such as the noise of the mob breaking down the front door, the scream of fire engines, or the realization that today is the Monday which on Friday night was a comfortably long way off. A dog’s wet nose is not strictly speaking the worst of the bunch, but it has its own peculiar dreadfulness which connoisseurs of the ghastly and dog owners everywhere have come to know and dread. It’s like having a small piece of defrosting liver pressed lovingly against you.
"Why is it all Mr. Dibbler’s films are set against the background of a world gone mad?" said the dwarf.
Soll’s eyes narrowed. "Because Mr. Dibbler,” he growled, “is a very observant man.”
