Best of the Discworld novels that I've read! Can understand why I was told to read Guards! Guards! and Moving Pictures first. I'd suggest the same, read those two first, then this one, and enjoy! ( ![]() The Night Watch is not exactly embracing affirmative action and Vines has only a few days left before marriage to Sybil and retirement from the Guards, when a missing dragon and an explosion at the Assassins Guild has Vimes upsetting the establishment. Sometimes what seems like and ending isn't anymore than what seems like a beginning brings everything crashing down. Gaspode has his own roll to play. Completely, predictably, thoroughly enjoyable. Some great laughs with Carrot's ascent to the captaincy of the city watch, and his wonderful love story with his werewolf girlfriend. Also some interesting political commentary, however indirectly, on the gun (gonne) issue. It was a very clever idea to give the gonne its own will, like an attuned magical weapon from the D&D universe. Also got to explore much more of Ankh-Morpork and learn more about how the guilds work. The Assassins were particularly prominent in this one, and also the Clowns. I loved how he described each clown ad basically trademarking their own makeup by painting it onto an egg. What a marvelous sight that gallery of eggs must be. Also loved how the trolls are portrayed as dim-witted only because their brains have to operate at room temperature. When super-cooled, they are superconducting geniuses. It looks like, given Carrot's list of demands for the Watch submitted to Vetinari at the end, the Watch is going to grow quite a bit in future books. I'm excited to see how. Finally, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the adorable, horrible little talking dog that makes himself useful to the investigation. STP's description of how a dog's nose descries their world is insightful and fascinating. More, please!
Though dotted with good and bad jokes Men at Arms isn't as purely funny as some of the series' earlier installments. Racial prejudice and gun control elicit some uncomfortably close-to-the-bone satire, while the search for the killer and his weapon is almost too gripping. By all means, give Pratchett a try, though you might want to start with, say, The Color of Magic or Guards! Guards! These books can sometimes be hard to find, even in paperback, but they repay any effort expended. I keep my copies on the shelf next to P.G. Wodehouse and Donald Westlake.
