To start with, the blurb on the CD pack of 4 CDs says that there are 10 stories, but there are only 8. I have found the original edition containing 10 stories here. The only "modern" authors are Colin Dexter and Muriel Spark, and my listening companion remarked how old fashioned some of the other stories felt. The stories do introduce detectives such as Edgar Wallace's J.G. Reeder and Sax Rhomer's Morris Klaw, whom modern readers would not be familiar with. But to bill these particular eight stories as "some of the best crime fiction ever written" is rather misleading. From an audio point of view, there was a bit of variability in volume level and recording quality, which was annoying. The Father Brown story, Chesterton's The Man in the Passage was probably the cleverest, but I think I enjoyed the crispness of Chimes by Muriel Spark the best. ( ) smik | Sep 15, 2012 |
Edward Hardwicke (who played Dr. Watson from 1986 to 1994 on various British Sherlock Holmes TV series) has the perfect voice and accent for this outstanding sampling of short, very British detective tales. Naturally, his Watson is pitch-perfect in Doyle’s “The Dying Detective,” but his Holmes is just as skillful. For Edgar Wallace’s J.G. Reeder (“The Green Mamba” and “The Poetical Policeman”), his delivery is unassuming but wry; as Sax Rohmer’s psychic antique dealer Morris Klaw (“The Case of the Tragedies of the Greek Room”), Hardwicke adopts a sharply arrogant style, and his version of C. Day Lewis’s Nigel Strangeways (“The Assassin’s Club”) is unadorned old-school stiff upper lip. His Inspector Morse and assistant Lewis (in Colin Dexter’s “The Burglar”) are satisfactory approximations of the characters’ TV portrayals, though that story and Muriel Spark’s “Chimes” fall a bit short of the “classic” standard set by the others. This selection of detective stories is a must-hear for mystery fans. Within the three-hour production, listeners will find a good range; there are stories from classic authors like Edgar Allan Poe ("The Purloined Letter"), as well as more contemporary pieces like Colin Dexter's "The Burglar." Stage and screen actor Edward Hardwicke (best known as Dr. Watson on PBS's "Mystery!") is a perfect match for these timeless tales. His energy and wit are apparent in all the pieces. Hardwicke's able performance makes Classic Detective Stories a great catch for mystery fans and newcomers alike. Indeholder
A wonderful selection of fictional detectives, all together in one superb collection of unabridged short stories. Find Sherlock Holmes with his long suffering colleague, Dr. Watson, in The Dying Detective, Father Brown as a witness in court in The Man in the Passage and everyone's favourite Inspector Morse in The Burglar. Appreciate Dame Muriel Spark's foray into the genre in Chimes and meet Nigel Strangeways, C. Day Lewis' (here writing as Nicholas Blake) young sleuth. Reader Edward Hardwicke, who played Watson to Jeremy Brett's Holmes in the early 1990s, makes an ideal reader for the genre.
