I love how the book had one page dedicated to the Spanish language and one page dedicated to English. It was a cute easy read poetry with repetition that students will love! ( ) I thoroughly enjoyed seeing both languages displayed in the book. I think that is a really good way to help both ELA ELS students and reach both groups of learners at young ages. In general it was a cute book and very good poem to help children start learning to count, speak in Spanish or English, and the illustrations were very great at depicting the what the the words were saying. In my opinion, "Ten Little Puppies" is a great book for younger students who are bilingual, or interested in learning Spanish. I really liked the language in this book because for a student who is trying to learn to read in English or a student who is interested in Spanish, the pattern and repetition of the book allows for an easier method of learning some of the words. For example, each page starts with "Oh, I had ten little puppies, ten little puppies had I," where the number "ten" in this case changes until it gets down to one. The paragraphs also rhyme, which would help an English learner find patterns and words that rhyme in English, making the reading easier. Something else unique about this book is that it goes to the tune of a song which is in the back of the book. Since this book is meant to be sung, it would be a great resource for a teacher to use if they have a diverse classroom, or just want to teach their students some Spanish. Songs are also a way to help children remember things. I also really liked the illustrations because each page had that number of puppies on it so the students could count them. For example, in the beginning when there are ten puppies, you can count all ten on the page. The big idea of this story was so teach children about a different language, whether it is to help Spanish speaking students learn English, or show English speaking students some Spanish.
In one of the most popular counting rhymes in Spanish folklore, 10 adorable puppies decrease by one with each page turn. Enticements such as snow, pastries, fireworks, a new home, theater, sickness, and fun cause the puppies to move on, until only one remains as a beloved companion for a child. Vibrant colored-pencil and watercolor illustrations are done in deep hues of green, pastels, and earth tones to create realistic images that capture the spontaneous, playful, and affectionate nature of the pups. The text can be sung or spoken in Spanish or English. The English translation skillfully utilizes rhyme to maintain the story's authenticity while accurately reflecting the original poem. The back section contains musical notation of the melody, guitar chord symbols, the bilingual verses in their entirety, and a glossary with information about the 10 dog breeds featured. Large, appealing illustrations will make this a favorite for storytime presentations; an excellent source in helping children to develop prereading skills, and a fun way to introduce them to early math concepts such as addition and subtraction.—Cristi Jenkins, Fort Vancouver Library District, WA (c) Copyright 2011.
