Van Gogh’s life and artistic development is rendered through the inspiration he took from nature and through his rela - tionship and correspondence with his brother Theo. The surreal, saturated il - lustrations underscore Van Gogh’s pas - sionate artistic vision

Most people already know the tragic story of Vincent Van Gogh. They know of his talent and of his struggle, but few know his life as it is described in this book. "Vincent van Gogh and the Colors of the Wind" is not just a biography; it's a story of two brothers and their connection to both art and each other. By including the relationship between Vincent and his brother, Theo, the book showcases more than just a great artist with a troubled mind. Readers see not only his passions but his motivations as well. A different aspect of art is shown- the feelings and struggle it takes to produce it. Today, van Gogh's work is regarded as something of beauty, but during its creation, it was marked as something of utter madness. By including both his art and quotes from his letters to Theo, a new appreciation for Vincent van Gogh and his life are discovered in this book. ( )

Summary: This book tells the story of Vincent Van Gogh. It touches on the importance of his relationship with his brother, Theo. It tells of his struggles and the people and places that influence his art. This book also has some great illustrations.

Personal Reaction: I liked this book because of the illustrations. The illustrations are bold, colorful and very appealing. Van Gogh is one of my favorites.

Extension Ideas: 1. Have children paint a picture of their own. 2. Discuss Van Gogh and his paintings.

Calling this book a biography is debatable given that there is a personified wind that speaks to Van Gogh throughout the story, but it is a lyrically written, elegantly illustrated introduction to the troubled but brilliant artist. ( )
