Jonah and Ruth were both travelers. Jonah traveled alone while Ruth traveledwith a companion. Jonah traveled away from God while Ruth traveled toward Him.Not only do we see human character (sometimes our own) portrayed in the journeysof Jonah and Ruth-we also see the character of God. In the Book of Jonah,we can examine God's persistence even with a runaway, His compassion for enemies, and His patience with a most reluctant student. The Book of Ruth reveals God'scommitment to a social outcast, His kindness to an immigrant, and His faithfulnessto a bitter old woman. We are all pilgrims-travelers through life-who have choices aboutattitudes, companions, directions, and more. But no matter how much we feelthat we choose our own paths, like Jonah and Ruth we are not really alone. Godis our friend for the journey. … (mere)
