The second collection of blazingly original short stories from Booker prize-winning, Sunday Times-bestselling author Ian McEwan. A two-timing pornographer becomes the unwilling object of one of his victim's vengeful fantasies. A millionaire buys himself the perfect mistress - passive, yet beautiful - but the union soon becomes a nightmare of jealousy and despair. And an ape reflects on the relationship with a young female writer, mourning their fading love and musing on the fateful deceptions of art. In these seven stories of dream-like lucidity, the wasteland of the human psyche is mapped with deadly precision. 'Resonant and frightening...totally original' Observer 'Exact, tender, funny, voluptuous, disturbing' The Times… (mere)

McEwan can write, that is for sure. This was just a very odd application of that talent. Eash of these stories is quite unsettling in some way. The tales all have quite an explicit element. There isquite a bot of ambiguity here, at times you feel that you're looking at the characters through a windown of smokey glass. If you're of a sensitive disposition, you may find some of these rather upsetting. I can't say I reccomend this piece of his writing, but I finished it nonetheless. ( )

McEwan aims for the sacred and the stunted in this kit bag of the abnormal. Half of the stories were wonderful and the others felt plastic and abortive. ( )

This is a very bizarre set of stories based around sex, though not as we know it (well, not as I know it in any case). McEwan being McEwan, it's all completely bizarre - dark, often depraved, and with weird psychological backdrops. For example, there's the gorilla coping with the aftermath of the sexual affair he's been having with the (human) woman he lives with, and the insanely jealous businessman who can't cope with the infidelities of the shop window mannequin he's sleeping with.

it goes without saying that it's well written, but I'm glad to be finished with it - it wasn't my cup of tea at all. This is McEwan in his early days in 1978. Thank goodness I didn't start with this or I'd never have read any McEwan again.

2.5 stars - well written, but really I don't need to read a description of an ape's penis. Some things cannot be umimagined once imagined. ( )

A neat collection of short stories, including one apocalyptic tale that really struck home. ( )

O'Byrne atravesó a pie el mercado del Soho hasta la tienda de su hermano, en Brewer Street. Un puñado de clientes hojeaba las revistas, y Harold los observaba a través de unas gafas de culo de vaso desde su tarima, en un rincón.
