"Jacques, Jojo, Simon, and Marcel were looking for buried treasure when they explored a cave in the south of France in 1940. But the treasure inside was not what they expected, and in fact far more valuable: the walls were covered with stunning prehistoric paintings and engravings, preserved within the sealed cave for over 17,000 years. This is the true story of the boys who discovered the cave of Lascaux, bringing to the modern world powerful examples of the very beginning of art."--Amazon.com.… (mere)

This is a great adventure based on a true story of 4 boys. The story took place around the beginning of world war II and these young boys were playing a mock war against another group of kids i would assume. Until the met a Boy who stumbled upon a cave known now as Lascaux. It was one of the greatest discoveries at that time because it was a cave full of old painting that were perfectly reserved without any fading. its a great story about how you never know what can be around where you live or stand. There are still many things yet to be discovered about our beautiful planet. ( )

Jacques Marsal was taught in school about prehistoric caves. He did not know that in 1940 at the beginning of World War II he would be with a group of friends looking for a cave in Lascaux thinking it held treasures. It held a different sort of treasure than the boys expected. They found the prehistoric cave drawing of horses, cows, and hunting themes. It was the greatest find of art in the history of France. The boys often camped out side the cave to protect it from people destroying it during the war. It is a true story of the history of the Lascaux caves. ( )

This story takes place south of France in 1940. The story also took place during World War II. Four young boys named Jacques, Jojo, Simon, and Marcel venture off into a deep hole in the ground curious see what is in the hole. To their surprise they found more than they expected a cave covered with images of animals . They found art. The four boys found engravings of Lascaux.

The story is a good read, but the story is fiction and the author adds in information to make the story sound good.
I like the authors note because it helps readers understand the actual history of the Lascaux cave. ( )

The beautiful illustrations drew me into this book that tells a bit of history that somehow eluded me thus far. I learned something new!

I didn't know much about the cave beforehand, but after reading this I was very interested in the topic. McCully always does an excellent job presenting her subject and this was no exception. To think this happened during the years of WWII is utterly fascinating. I wonder if anyone over found the treasure that the one boy expected to find in the caves. The afterword was every bit as informative as the text itself. Wonderful book. Well worth your time. ( )
