The shop was started by Derek "Bram'" Stokes, Diane Lister (later Diane Stokes) joined in 1969. The shop was managed by fantasy author Stan Nicholls.

Nick Landau (later to be founder of Forbidden Planet and Titan Entertainment Group), was a customer of the shop, and produced a fanzine on the shop's Duplex machine. Stokes and Landau Also assisted in getting the British Comic Art Convention started from 1968–1981. Stokes was the main organizer of the 1969 and 1971 editions of the UK Comicon.

The store's lease was owned by the Salvation Army, a Christian group that had dedicated itself to buying leases in Soho, London, to prevent the spread of pornographic shops, and so Derek had to persuade them that he was selling children's comics and Victorian fiction. :D
