I'm cross-posting this is a number of groups, so please forgive me if you've seen this already.

In his column today, Dan Savage discusses the suicide of Billy Lucas, a gay teenager who killed himself due to the bullying and torment he faced in school. Says Dan: " I wish I could have talked to this kid for five minutes. I wish I could have told Billy that it gets better. I wish I could have told him that, however bad things were, however isolated and alone he was, it gets better.

But gay adults aren’t allowed to talk to these kids. Schools and churches don’t bring us in to talk to teenagers who are being bullied. Many of these kids have homophobic parents who believe that they can prevent their gay children from growing up to be gay—or from ever coming out—by depriving them of information, resources, and positive role models.

Why are we waiting for permission to talk to these kids? We have the ability to talk directly to them right now. We don’t have to wait for permission to let them know that it gets better. We can reach these kids.

So he has started the "It Gets Better" project, a YouTube channel where gays and lesbians can post videos to talk to kids about their lives, to give them hope.

Please help.

Thank you for drawing attention to this issue, the YouTube site is great, hope that lots of people get to see it.
This is an important issue world wide not just in the USA, young people especially in more remote areas are at greater risk, Australia has a very high Youth suicide rate. Often let pass as unknown reason but from what one see and hears one is inclined to feel that the authorises and often family's are in denial about the real problem behind what has happened. "Bulling" is blamed not why it is happening. People in small communities feel unable to talk to anyone for fear that there confidentiality will be compromised.

Been there, and YES -IT GETS BETTER!

You're very welcome.

I think the popularity of that site has been a surprise even to its creator. A lot of nonsense is spread via the Internet. It's nice to see that hope can spread that way as well.

Great site, thanks for posting, lilithcat. Conservatives do all they can to keep any positive mention of homosexuality away from children. Such sites are needed.
