I'm curious to know how many readers of Deaf literature know American Sign Langauge. I can sign ASL and a little bit of SEE. I don't think SEE makes much visual sense though, and I don't like it very much. Do you sign?

I sifn a little. I took it at Sinclair Community college in Dayton, OH. I also socialized, a little, with a woman who was deaf. I found out she taught at Sinclair and Wright State. Later, she left to teach at Gallaudet.

spartan, I see from your profile that you're British. If you were an American like me, the (U.S.) Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 would guarantee you the right to a sign language interpreter in court and in nearly all other interactions with government, local or national.

However, as a Briton, you're covered by the Equality Act 2010. While a big step forward in rights for deaf Britons, a quick look seems to indicate that it only gives you rights in the area of employment, housing, education, and interactions with the police. I see nothing granting you the right to an interpreter when dealing with your government, the police aside.

I may be missing something since I only took a quick overview glance of the Equality Act 2010, and there may be other legislation that would apply to you. If you haven't already done so, I would contact the Civil Legal Advice helpline and the organisation called Disability Rights UK, to see what other information, advice and help they can give you in your situation. Best of luck.
