Matters of Life & Death.
Laurie Clancy is mesmerised by the careful stories of a master of Irish melancholy. Review of Matters of Life and Death by Bernard MacLaverty
The literary influence is that of James Joyce, and especially the Joyce of Dubliners, arguably the finest and most influential collection of short stories in English in the 20th century. Joyce documented the miserable and repressed lives of his protagonists in a style he famously described as "scrupulous meanness", and MacLaverty has profited from his example.

I've done a review on his 'Walking the dog' collection of short stories which is excellent. Grace notes IMO is his best novel. He's definitely under the radar in the United States.

I'm currently reading Matters of Life and Death and am completely captivated.

I agree, he is definitely under the radar here in the U.S.
