I thought I would share the opening of two new bookstores in Durham, NC. They are both located in Northgate Mall.

Urban Knowledge (near Sears) specializes in Afro-centric books. It is one in a chain owned by urban lit author Carl Weber. While it mainly focuses on urban lit offerings, other categories are also represented.

Northgate Books takes the spot where Waldenbooks and then Book Warehouse were located. The entrance is the closest one to the movie theater. They sell used books in all categories. Large selection of literature, mystery, sci-fi, romance, children's, etc. Their prices are a little higher than some of the other non-mall used stores I frequent, but there selection is quite broad. Falls River Books in Raleigh is owned by the same person.

Thanks for the bookstore info I was just in Durham at a little downtown Parisian cafe: Rue Cler **** To my surprise I went with my son to Edward McKays Books etc. (not my #1 pick) in Winston-Salem and to my surprise it was comfortable. They had several books that I had an eye for and served tea and coffee! Much better than Greensboro's -- it's too overloaded.

Thanks for letting us know! I was aware of Urban Knowledge but I never seem to walk down the part of the mall where Northgate Books is located. I went by there today to check it out.

I visited both of these stores for the 2nd time this past weekend. Urban Knowledge has increased their inventory and it is about 95% urban lit. The owner of Northgate Books was in this time. They have free coffee and wi-fi with a few tables and chairs. I relieved them of all of their African and Caribbean Writers Series they had.

JulesOnMars there is a Edward McKays in Raleigh as well. That is the only one I have been to. I don't get out to the Raleigh store too much but did recently go in when I had to get my car worked on. They have really improved their labeling system. Instead of generic subject headings, they break it down to smaller and smaller subjects within a particular genre. Half of their store they sell music, electronics (ebook readers, iPods, graphing calculators)

bibliorex, check out the News Observer over the next few days. On this past Sunday, Northgate Books had a 25% off entire purchase coupon through July 5th in the paper. My fav used store in Durham is Nice Price Books on Board Street. As soon as you go in, they have 2 bookcases of new arrivals with very good turnover. I did visit their 2nd branch in Carrboro for the first time a couple weeks ago and their selection is even better. Right around the corner from Nice Price Books in Durham is Books Do Furnish a Room. I don't get there as often b/c I end up spending my allotted money in Nice Price :) Nice Price also has a great selection of LPs and CDs; Books Do Furnish a Room has a great selection of comics and graphic novels.

Also about 6 branches of the public library sale books ($1 mass market ppbk, $2 trade, $3 hardcover, $5-7 for best sellers). I find the North Regional branch up near Northern HS has the best selection and turnover. Near brand new books that have not circulated. The Main branch on Roxboro is kinda picked over whenever I go there (huge amounts of people go in and out of there daily), Stanford Warren has a lot more Afr-Am.

And the one book sale a year you must go to happens in Raleigh (Wake County Public Library sponsors). It happens once a year around November. They extended it from 7 to 10 days this past year. The line runs around the mall, they have shopping carts (but get their early the first few days to grab one). You will leave with boxes of books.

goddesspt2 thanks for the bookshop information. I'll note the Library book sale in Raleigh too. This past weekend drove to Durham and stopped by Wentworth and Leggett a really sweet unique bookshop and the booksellers were very cool knowledgeable folks. I purchased a very very good condition of Alice Walker's Temple of My Familiar (which I haven't read). http://www.wentworthleggettbooks.com/

JulsOnMars, I finally made it to Wentworth -- very nice. I picked up several books then headed over to El Rodeo across the plaza for fajitas and a magarita :D

I largely ignored this thread (I live four hours from Durham) but yesterday I found myself in the food court at Northgate Mall, staring up at an advertisement for the used bookstore there. They have a nice literature selection (didn't get time to look at much else, unfortunately). Some books were a bit out of range of what I like to pay, but it looked like they were all half off the original, new price.
