Should we start nominating books for the next round? I think the ground rules last time were:
1.) Nominate up to 2 books
2.) Second as many book as you like
3.) All seconded books will go into the voting round (and you can vote for up to 3 books)

Should we nominate until Saturday? I do not know how to set up the poll, so please help!

Hi Tech, i was just about to set up a nominations thread. Good thinking!

I'm happy to set up the poll but should we have a longer period for nominations?...the group has been pretty quiet lately.

I nominate:
The Adventures of Augie March by Saul Bellow
Hunger by Knut Hamsun

jun 22, 2010, 11:44 am

I'm still working on the last two books, but I'll check in here and there.

Glad to see this starting up.

I nominate:
The Red and the Black--Stendhal
The Hobbitt

5technodiabla
Redigeret: jun 22, 2010, 4:19 pm

I'll nominate:

Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison
and Jude the Obscure by Thomas Hardy

I'll second The Adventures of Augie March, Hunger, and The Red and the Black

Going to be some excellent options it looks like!
I'll leave the closing of nominations and polls to someone else now-- I'm too new here!

6george1295
jun 22, 2010, 5:36 pm

I second Invisible Man.

7JoseBuendia
jun 23, 2010, 2:52 pm

I'll nominate Portrait of a Lady and second The Red and the Black.

8lilisin
jun 23, 2010, 3:36 pm

Looks like I don't have to re-nominate The Red and the Black from last voting session as it's been done for me. Yay.

I will re-nominate though:
Dumas: La reine Margot (Queen Margot)

9socialpages
jun 23, 2010, 4:56 pm

I'll nominate Bleak House and second Portrait of a Lady and La Reine Margot.

10george1295
jun 23, 2010, 6:04 pm

I'll second Bleak House. There are some excellent choices on this list. Deciding which to vote for will be tough.

11jfetting
jun 23, 2010, 7:39 pm

Bleak House has already been done by this group, BTW. Are we doing repeats?

I second La reine Margot.

12wookiebender
jun 23, 2010, 11:27 pm

Can I third The Invisible Man? Just bought a copy on the weekend. :)

And I'll also third The Adventures of Augie March.

I'll nominate Madame Bovary, let's see if it'll get over the line this time! :)

And, I'd rather not repeat books either (even though I wasn't in this group for the first read of Bleak House). Plenty of other books out there without us having to double up!

#11 Thanks for pointing out Bleak House has been done by this group, I don't want to repeat books either.

I'll second Madame Bovary.

jun 24, 2010, 4:59 am

There's some great nominations as usual. Shall we keep the nomination period open until Wednesday 30 June and then have a week of polling?

15wrmjr66
jun 24, 2010, 8:25 am

Is there a list of what has been done already?

I'll nominate Adam Bede and second socialpages second of Madame Bovary.

16george1295
jun 24, 2010, 8:32 am

#12-Wookie, there is a huge difference between Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man nominated by #5-Techno and H.G. Wells' The Invisible Man. Are you nominating The Invisible Man?

I withdraw my second of Bleakhouse. Although I joined this group to late to read it, I would not want to have a repeat up for nomination.

17wookiebender
jun 24, 2010, 8:36 am

#16> I am seconding Ralph Ellison's The Invisible Man, sorry for the confusion. (I do like H.G. Wells, but he's not exactly challenging, and I do think this group is more about challenging works, where it's nice to have other people to read along with. H.G. Wells is the sort of author whose books get knocked off on a rainy weekend day. :)

I was just thirding, because I was actually going to nominate it, but by the time I checked in, it had already been nominated *and* seconded!

#15> wrmjr66, There is a list of the books already discussed on the front page of this group: http://www.librarything.com/groups/groupreadsliterature

I nominate The Way We Live Now by Anthony Trollope.

The Golden Notebook by Lessing and
Shirley by Charlotte Brontë.

17> Thanks, Wookiebender

I second The Golden Notebook.

I nominate Here Be Dragons by Sharon Kay Penman

seconding The Red and the Black, Portrait of a Lady and Queen Margot by Dumas looks like an exciting read!

jun 28, 2010, 11:38 am

The Adventures of Augie March

I'll add to the nominations with The Diary of a Nobody by the Grossmiths and Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott.

26socialpages
jun 29, 2010, 3:23 am

I'll second The Diary of a Nobody. I thought it was hilarious, my teenage daughter thought it was lame. Can't please everyone.

27george1295
jun 29, 2010, 6:41 pm

Since I can hardly remember being a teenager, I'll third The Diary of a Nobody.

jun 30, 2010, 2:24 pm

Hi follks

The link to the poll is below. You can vote for as many books as you want but please don't vote more than once for a particular book. I'll be keeping an eye on this!... if that's possible with MisterPoll.

I've set the closing date for Monday 5 July if people think that's ok? If there's two clear winner we'll read both those books. If results are not that clear then we'll have a second poll.

30lilisin
jun 30, 2010, 2:31 pm

I have voted and am waiting anxiously to see if I'll be opening up one of my choices soon. If not I'll just read La Reine Margot on my own as I've been wanting to read that this summer.

31george1295
jul 1, 2010, 8:35 am

I voted. Looks like a list of very good reads.

32LibrarianBarb
jul 1, 2010, 8:47 am

I will make an unusual recommendation - I would nominate two books - a recent book 'Lady Vernon and Her Daughter' by Jane Rubino and Caitlen Rubino-Bradway and 'Lady Susan' by Jane Austen. 'Lady Susan' is a short novel written in letters that Jane Austen wrote when she was about 19-20 and 'Lady Vernon' is a recent adaptation of the book - i have seen a lot of online commentary about the 'liberties' that the authors took while keeping it strictly Austen and there has been a new interest in 'Lady Susan' because there have been a couple recent stage plays based on it.
I would also go for the Sharon Penman book.
Anything by Jane Austen
The Hound of the Baskervilles

Hm, looks like a three-way tie at the moment. :) Anyone else still to vote??

34scarper
jul 5, 2010, 8:49 am

It looks like we'll need another poll to choose a winner: The Red and the Black, Portrait of a Lady and Madame Bovary are tied on 10 votes. Will i set up a poll for these three books?

35technodiabla
jul 5, 2010, 11:32 am

yes please! I'm about to go on a trip and want to know which books to bring with me.

36scarper
jul 5, 2010, 5:26 pm

The tie break poll is here:
http://www.misterpoll.com/polls/491690

And the results are here:
http://www.misterpoll.com/polls/491690/results

I don't think i'll be reading any of these three books so i'll stand down and let others decide when voting should end. Happy reading!

jul 7, 2010, 12:15 am

I suggest COB Wednesday. If the top two stay as is (The Red and the Black & Madame Bovary) may I suggest we read them in that order. I have read that Stendhal was a great influence on Flaubert and am curious if I can see that while reading.

38rosemeria
jul 8, 2010, 2:27 am

Technodiabla,
That sounds like a good plan. I will need to find a copy of The Red and the Black; any suggestions on which English translation is best? I heard that the new translation by Burton Raffel is a little too modern, changing the writing style too much. Help....

39technodiabla
jul 8, 2010, 7:37 am

I'm reading Henri Peyre. It's easy reading, I don't know it is authentic or not, but I like it.

Anyone know how to close the poll?

40george1295
jul 8, 2010, 7:59 am

Techno, the poll should close on the close date that was set when the poll was set up. If you want to change the close date, then who ever (Scraper?) set up the poll can go in and edit the poll to change the close date.

41technodiabla
jul 8, 2010, 2:35 pm

OK thanks-- I don't care when it closes, but didn't know how that actually happened. Thanks!

42technodiabla
jul 10, 2010, 10:33 pm

Looks like the poll closed with The Red and the Black the first choice, followed by Madame Bovary.

I'm 100 pages into R&B and am really enjoying it, though it is nothing at all what I expected.

43Cecilturtle
jul 11, 2010, 12:53 pm

I've read both (mandatory curriculum reading in the French program!) but I'll look forward to your comments. Two very dramatic but different books.

44lilisin
jul 13, 2010, 6:03 pm

Can we start a thread? Maybe separate it into its two books? I started it last night.

45technodiabla
jul 13, 2010, 11:01 pm

sounds good to me.

46lilisin
jul 14, 2010, 2:24 am

I created both threads and they are now on the group's main page. Happy reading everyone and see you guys there!
