July--Sept Nominations

Should we start nominating books for the next round? I think the ground rules last time were:
1.) Nominate up to 2 books
2.) Second as many book as you like
3.) All seconded books will go into the voting round (and you can vote for up to 3 books)

Should we nominate until Saturday? I do not know how to set up the poll, so please help!

Hi Tech, i was just about to set up a nominations thread. Good thinking!

I'm happy to set up the poll but should we have a longer period for nominations?...the group has been pretty quiet lately.

I'll second Bleak House. There are some excellent choices on this list. Deciding which to vote for will be tough.

And, I'd rather not repeat books either (even though I wasn't in this group for the first read of Bleak House). Plenty of other books out there without us having to double up!

#12-Wookie, there is a huge difference between Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man nominated by #5-Techno and H.G. Wells' The Invisible Man. Are you nominating The Invisible Man?

I withdraw my second of Bleakhouse. Although I joined this group to late to read it, I would not want to have a repeat up for nomination.

#16> I am seconding Ralph Ellison's The Invisible Man, sorry for the confusion. (I do like H.G. Wells, but he's not exactly challenging, and I do think this group is more about challenging works, where it's nice to have other people to read along with. H.G. Wells is the sort of author whose books get knocked off on a rainy weekend day. :)

I have voted and am waiting anxiously to see if I'll be opening up one of my choices soon. If not I'll just read La Reine Margot on my own as I've been wanting to read that this summer.

I will make an unusual recommendation - I would nominate two books - a recent book 'Lady Vernon and Her Daughter' by Jane Rubino and Caitlen Rubino-Bradway and 'Lady Susan' by Jane Austen. 'Lady Susan' is a short novel written in letters that Jane Austen wrote when she was about 19-20 and 'Lady Vernon' is a recent adaptation of the book - i have seen a lot of online commentary about the 'liberties' that the authors took while keeping it strictly Austen and there has been a new interest in 'Lady Susan' because there have been a couple recent stage plays based on it.
I would also go for the Sharon Penman book.

I suggest COB Wednesday. If the top two stay as is (The Red and the Black & Madame Bovary) may I suggest we read them in that order. I have read that Stendhal was a great influence on Flaubert and am curious if I can see that while reading.

That sounds like a good plan. I will need to find a copy of The Red and the Black; any suggestions on which English translation is best? I heard that the new translation by Burton Raffel is a little too modern, changing the writing style too much. Help....

I'm reading Henri Peyre. It's easy reading, I don't know it is authentic or not, but I like it.

Techno, the poll should close on the close date that was set when the poll was set up. If you want to change the close date, then who ever (Scraper?) set up the poll can go in and edit the poll to change the close date.

I'm 100 pages into R&B and am really enjoying it, though it is nothing at all what I expected.

I've read both (mandatory curriculum reading in the French program!) but I'll look forward to your comments. Two very dramatic but different books.

Can we start a thread? Maybe separate it into its two books? I started it last night.
