I really want to read some African fiction. I am spending to months in Uganda this fall, and I want to read more about the country.

It's not fiction, but I'd recommend Finnstrom's Living with Bad Surroundings, an ethnography about the ongoing conflict in Northern Uganda.

One fiction book set in Uganda is Dream of Darkness by Patrick Ruell i.e. Reginald Hill.

Although it's historical fiction and has been made into a not-too-great movie, The Last King of Scotland is a good book. The Heart of the Nile is also historical fiction, although based upon historical records as much as they're available. I lived there for 3 years, but sadly didn't read much fiction about Uganda. If you can get a copy of The Man With the Key Has Gone!, it paints an accurate but less serious picture of the country--plus if you get sick, you'll want to go to Dr. Clarke's International Clinic or International Hospital!
Hope you have a great time in the country--where specifically are you going in the country?

I'am going to Kampala. I'm doing an internship in the ob/gyn ward on the makerere university hospital.
I've started Things Fall Apart yesterday, and I really like it so far.
Thank you for all your tips!
