Which books do you wish Persephone would reissue?

If Persephone asked us what we would like to see reissued, what would we choose? My own top choices are:
Margery Sharp The Flowering Thorn,
Dodie Smith New Moon with the Old and D. E. Stevenson Miss Buncle Married

I've just noticed a dormant thread on the same topic. Interesting that NB is said not to care for Margery Sharp. Maybe she just hasn't read the right ones. Flowering Thorn is not one of her best-known books but one of the funniest and most involving. Set in the 1920s, it is the story of an aimless young woman's growth to maturity through her impulsive decision to adopt a young boy. It ticks all of Persephone's boxes -- independent women, position of women in society of the time, country living, domesticity, parenthood. It also skewers both the "bright young things" of the 20s and the city-dwellers' prejudices about the country. In fact, anyone who likes Cold Comfort Farm might get quite a kick out of it. So, Persephone, why not?

Several people mentioned New Moon With the Old. It's a long time since I read it, but it seems to me it was a good read as long as you aren't hoping for another I Capture the Castle (There isn't one, so don't worry.)

Funny that you mention Margery Sharp, because I was just thinking of Rhododendron Pie, which has been sadly out of print for a very long time.
I own a copy, as well as one of The Flowering Thorn, but I know neither one is very easy to find at a sane price.
I have enjoyed all the Margery Sharp's I have read, and I shall be always ready to support any proposal to reprint her.

Definitely Miss Buncle Married, and also The Two Mrs. Abbotts. Would be fantastic to have the set in Persephone!

I've mentioned it before but I absolutely loved Ethel Wilson's The Innocent Traveller and she is already a Persephone author. That apart, I am at a loss. These ladies at Virago and Persephone seem to have covered all the bases.

I'd love to see Angela Thirkell's High Rising reprinted by Persephone; it checks all the boxes mentioned above (an edition was done a couple of years ago by someone else, but I'd love to see a proofreader go through the book and clean up the punctuation a bit). Plus, Thirkell's the sister of an author Persephone already publish (Denis Mackail).

I didn't think Persephone reprinted books from as late as the '80s, until I found out they're doing Still Missing this year. I'd love to see Velocity by Kristin McCloy reprinted. Really, really beautiful (but sometimes disturbing).

Interesting choices and books that I must seek out if people think they are worthy of being Persephones!

I noticed that my blog review of Susan Glaspell's Fugitive's Return was mentioned in one of the quarterly letters. I hope that means it's being considered for reissue.

I did once email NB to recommend Rhododendron Pie, and she did tell me she didn't care for Margery Sharp. The novel is so well-written, and the story—about a girl from an eccentric and artistic family coming to terms with her longing for a little middle class normalcy—seems right for Persephone.

I totally agree with you, Rob. Rhododendron Pie is a little gem.
I apologize if I sound snotty, but I was not favourably impressed by Ms. Beauman's condescending attitude and reply to an enquiry I sent quite a while ago. Were it not that I like what they publish (at least most of it), I would never buy a Persephone.

Yes, I met her once and she was lovely. And when I suggested a future Persephone book in a letter, I had a very friendly letter back ... although not an encouraging one! ;)

#6, I'd love to see Thirkell's whole Barsetshire series reprinted by Persephone; I think they'd be perfect, and both Persephone fans and Thirkell collectors would buy them up fast.

Those of us who would like to see Margery Sharp back in print might do well to try Faber Finds -- when they first announced that they would like reader input I suggested The Flowering Thorn and The Nutmeg Tree. Didn't know Rhododendron Pie, but look forward to meeting it if I can find a copy at a price that doesn't run to three figures.

Miss Buncle Married is one of next year's Persephones - it was republished here this year by Isis Large Print books although that's mostly sold out already, it was probably for the public library market but it gave me a chance to read it.
