I just saw this article among the 2009 top science stories from Discover.

"After the end of the disastrous space shuttle program, it's not at all clear where the space agency is going"
The lead in surprised me. I had not thought of the shuttle program as disastrous. And I had thought that NASA had a real sense of direction.
Though this was posted today in BA and there was an article about insufficient funding for near earth objects.
