[Vanity Fair] Part One:

Part One of Vanity Fair will consist of Chapters I (Chiswick Mall) -- XV (In Which Rebecca's Husband Appears for a Short Time).

I am enjoying this read tremendously and I find much to admire in our little Becky Sharp. She has a lot on the ball and is very quick to know what she need do in order to attain her wants/needs. Those who pity her need think again.
I find Jos to be a big old baby puss and just needs to "man up". But his character truly suits the story. I do think that his sister, Miss Amelia's character changes too much in the story line. I quite liked her in the beginning, but now...................
The class levels in Vanity Fair are very much "out there" but strangely I see a lot of the same small ostrazings going on today even in my small community.

Do you think Becky may be the genesis of "sharp" meaning quick witted, intelligent, smart, or was it playing off that meaning of sharp for her name?

I really don't know as I am not familiar at all with Thackeray but either way it works, doesn't it? She is a very "sharp" little character and I actually like her a great deal. Not a good mama though.

It is a pleasure to be re-reading Vanity Fair. Although there are no surprises for me I am enjoying reacquainting myself with the characters, especially Becky Sharp and dear old Dobbin.

I am reading from my Easton Press edition. It has many wonderful illustrations.

It's a good thing Becky got away from Mr. Sedley, that is exactly how I pictured him.
So, far a very fun enjoyable read, prefect for my holiday reading. My first Thackeray novel too.

I am at the point where Amelia is just sitting in her house looking out the window waiting for "her man". This is quite sad. Times sure have changed. I was thinking about this today. It really was much more interesting for women of this time period to be in the working class. At least they did not sit around just waiting for something or someone to happen. Emmy's got the cash, but Becky's life is much more interesting.
