I'm working on a Kindle import feature. It's going to work by asking members to select, copy and paste the filenames from the documents folder on their Kindle, when plugged into a computer.

For example, here's part of mine:

If you want to help out, post yours here, or send it to me by email tim@librarything.com. I know it's easy on a Mac. Just find the folder, select all (command-A), copy, paste elsewhere.

Anyone?

Hi Tim,

It looks like you want both the .azw and .mbp files. Is that the case?

Just checking,

I want the file list. I'm frankly not sure which is which, and whether I can do it by .azw alone.

OK, I will email you with an attachment. The .azw files are the books. The .mbp books contain information about bookmarks, notes, where you are in the book etc.

Tim, I'm emailing mine to you.

It appears to me that all book files, whether .azw, .txt, .mobi, or .prc, are the actual book contents.
Books which have been opened at least once get a new file called .mbp, so in terms of importing, the .mbp files are probably superfluous.
Samples also get an .azw file, but the type (part of the file name) is shown as EBSP instead of EBOK, which is part of the name of all books which are not samples. Magazines get type_MAGZ. Not sure what newspapers or personal files get.

I'm not sure what these files are:
EBOK_B002LH5BOU29794.partdldtmp
EBOK_B0015DWIYM53515.partdldtmp

I subscribe to the New Yorker, and these files refer to that content. Only the last file below shows changes as the issues change.
MAGZ_B002ASAT6A53517.partdldtmp
MAGZ_B002ASAT6A53518.partdldtmp
MAGZ_B002JVXVOA29787.partdldtmp

I am terminally technically challenged and I do not understand what you want or how I find it to send it to you. Can you explain this more slowly and with single-syllable words?

Did anything ever come of this?

Tim, I just emailed the contents of my Kindle1 documents folder, each file pasted into an email to you. The total size of the files is 467 MB for 635 items.

I should have realized that the email is too large for transmission. I will break it down into small bites (not bytes) and try again tomorrow.

You do realize that he's only asking for a list of the file names in the documents folder and not the files themselves?

Tim,

Email sent.

To those of you wanting to know how to do what Tim is asking on a Windows computer.

1. Open up your command prompt by typing cmd in the run dialog box or Start Search, and hitting Enter.

2. Navigate to the directory which has the files and type the following command -
DIR /B /O:N > filename.txt
This will save all the filenames in the current directory to a text file. The text file will be saved in the same directory.
3. To save file names from any sub-directories in the current folder, just add /S like -
DIR /B /O:N /S > filename.txt

Then attach the file you just created to an email and send it to Tim.

Hope this helps.

Tim:
I finally found out how to send Kindle file labels as opposed to Kindle files. I just emailed 635 file labels to you.
