Just thought I would say hello!

I spotted this on the new groups list. This is a nice idea. Recognising some familiar names from LT and the 1010 I hope you don't mind if I just hop on board and reserve myself some space! I was having problems narrowing down my category challenge by country.

Other things going on at the moment so I expect that like in the 1010 this will drop to the bottom of the thread (makes it so much easier to find -even starred)

I will be editing and re-organising.

First thoughts - take an imaginary train ride through Europe (with detours of course!)

I have no idea how many countries I will*visit* but I prefer a good book (and lots of photos) to travelling myself.

Yippee more research _ thinks *trains of Europe*

The Orient Express!

A good start London to Istanbul!

Rather than an alphabetical list I have split Europe into regions. I hope I have remembered enough ways to *split* Europe to leave room for books in each country! Just thought I would get it all laid out! The random groups at the end are for any I might miss. (or re-visit)

Not being unfriendly please drop by and visit!

Leave a message (with this I doubt I will be *at home*!)

Looks very intricate and interesting this. Will be exciting just to see the routes unveil!

The first might just be Murder on the Orient Express; just to set the scene!

I had decided to wait for January for the 1010 so a challenge to start now seems like fun. Thanks for setting it up.

Researching train routes is interesting! but frustrating.

I have already discovered about 4 variations on the route of the Orient Express. It seemed like a good idea when I first spotted this. :(

Thanks for dropping by. I better check out a few other threads for ideas myself! and those train routes:)

It's still a fun idea! May I recommend The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society as a boat trip? One of my top reads for this year!

Thankyou! I haven't read that.

thinks *Now do I find a book for each Channel Island or forget considering a Gerald Durrell for Jersey!*

I think one of the Sarah Caudwell books is set in Jersey. The Sirens Sang of Murder is set in the Channel Islands, but I'm not sure which one. Really funny.

Right! I am here to admit that it was probably a mistake to sign up for this one. I have looked at my books and realised that there is not much of a European theme going on in mount TBR so maybe I will slot things in as I read them (if I remember!) but think it might be better to admit now that this is one challenge that will probably never be met (and as for the train theme - what was I thinking! Have you tried to research travelling Europe by train! Scandinavia doesn't even link up LOL)

Sorry:) (maybe I should try a numerical challenge!)

Never say never - you never know when you will read a book for a strange country:)

23calm
sep 3, 2009, 4:48 pm

I said I will slip them in as and when. Do you think I should include the one I just read - London; Paris and Albania/Greece. (Fairyland by Paul J McAuley) I think it covers too many countries and to be true to the challenge any book I read should be mainly set in one!

Reading should never be a chore, challenge or not. Sad to see you go, but see you in the other challenges!

25calm
sep 3, 2009, 4:55 pm

I didn't say I was going just that my reading doesn't seem to fit! (at the moment!)

Ah, right! No rush. I'm here for another decade probably...

Can I as a Swede be of assistance for your scandinavian trip?

27calm
sep 3, 2009, 5:05 pm

I think my Scandinavian knowledge stops at Norse mythology; Erik the Red; Icelandic and Vinland sagas (a long time ago anyway!). Can I count mythology from each country- I would be well ahead!

28GingerbreadMan

I've seen some people add countries long since gone for this challenge. I'm thinking I'll make a geographic approximation and place the book in question in an existing country (if possible). So I'd definitely count mythology if I can place it. Nifelheim or Yggdrasil is not Europe, Vinland is.

I was thinking about assistance with putting a train route together for Scandinavia, if that idea still stands.

Calm, don't worry you won't be alone.

SO far this year I've read 116 books and only 2, 2! were in Europe.
At this rate it will take me 20 years to finish, but I'm giving it a try!
Who knows, maybe a get on a roll and find oodles of books for different countries.

I discovered that I rarely read American books as soon as I joined the 50 States challenge. It's fun to try to find suitable books as I go. We'll all be here awhile, especially with all those smaller countries.

" Have you tried to research travelling Europe by train! Scandinavia doesn't even link up LOL"

It does: Hamburg - Copenhagen - Stockholm via the Great-Belt Bridge/Tunnel (10 hours, change in Copenhagen only, highspeed trains ICE and X2000 --whatever that is worth on non-highspeed tracks). But the connection is so new that it probably doesn't feature in any story).

Book for Germany: Sten Nadolnys Netzkarte, a story about a young man travelling West-Germany with a "network ticket" (one month, full national rail network). Most of Nadolny's books are available in English.
