I cross-posted this in Name That Book, hope y'all don't mind:

My uncle gave this description to me, and while I think I know who the speaker in the book is, I don't recognize the book it's from:

An imperial is talking about how when the last Death Star was destroyed, and one of the Destroyers nose-dived into another Destroyer. Apparently the one that nose-dived was the imperial flag ship, and most of the senior officers were on it, and the ship it crashed into held all the next-highest officers. Meaning, all the officers that would have replaced the higher ones were killed at the same time. He went to talk about the horrible loss of life, and the difficulties of restructuring their ranks. My uncle said the way he talked you couldn't help but like him and feel for the loss.

He also said he only read the first chapter or so of the book. I think the speaker is either Thrawn or Fel, but I can't remember a SW book where Fel had opening credits, so...

ETA: someone identified it in Name That Book.

Is your uncle sure it was ship to ship? The reason I ask is because The Executor did take the plunge, but it wasn't into another ship. The scene you describe does also sound familiar and with the characters you describe, it could be either one of the later books in the Legacy of the Jedi series, or, more likely to me, Survivor's Quest.

Yeah, it was the Executor, he just had that one detail (crashing into another ship) wrong. The book we were looking for is Heir to the Empire, and the paragraph he was remembering is on page 3.
