Hi Folks,

I have been on my veg diet for about 6 months now and find it difficult to lose weight evn though I exercise often.

Can someone tell me if tofu that I eat is fattening and if eating just beans instead is better weight wise?

I prefer a veggie diet, but I sense I have lots to learn re losing weight.

Vegetarian, and even vegan, doesn't necessarily equal weight loss. After all, potato chips are vegan. Mmmm. Potato chips.....

Tofu isn't exactly low calorie. Some silken brands are "light," and would fit the bill.

Beans are low cal and zero fat. TVP (textured vegetable protein), which can be bought dry and rehydrated, is also really low calorie and zero fat. Just be sure to check the labels if you are buying processed veggie foods. A lot of them have cheese and fillers to make them taste better, so they are not necessarily healthy despite being meat free.

Anyone going on a vegetarian diet must, just for survival, became quite aware of food intake. Presently, we are watching a Teaching Company (WWW.Teach12.com) lecture series "Nutrition Made Clear". We have been vegetarians for nearly twenty years, and so far, this has been the most helpful source of information. Initially, the Teaching Company series are quite expensive, however, at least twice a year they go on sale, reducing prices by as much as $500. So, if one is interested in acquiring this series, check with the Teaching Company site periodically for their sale.

I've heard rave reviews from LTers about Teaching Company history discs, but didn't know that TC did nutrition and such as well! It may be worth checking your local library to see if they have any TC titles in stock, in order to save some money.

I recommend the book Appetite for Reduction I got it a couple of weeks ago and it is amazing. I already lost a few pounds. The recipes are super healthy and they have a lot of info on proper nutrition.

Hey there, and good luck with the veg journey. With tofu, usually the firmer it is, the fattier it is. You need to read the labels, though.

I'm a vegan now, but back when I originally quit meat, I was a teenager and didn't do it particularly carefully: I became an absolute cheese fiend and ended up gaining weight.

I'm a moderator on a noncommercial veg forum, VegPeople.com, which contains boards for newbies as well as veg*ns who are trying to lose weight. The support can be a huge help to folks who are just starting out. Sorry to plug away, but I thought it might help.

I haven't tried them personally, but I know people have had success reaching or maintaining a healthy weight with Joel Fuhrman and John A. McDougall's nutrition guidelines. They're both interested in disease prevention through diet as well.

The vegan cookbook "Appetite for Reduction" is centered on low-fat, vegan recipes so you might want to try it out.

Before I transitioned from vegetarian to vegan I ate a lot of dairy and highly processed kinds of food (frozen meals, chips, fast food etc.) and did not lose any weight. After transitioning to vegan I made more of an effort to eat lots of fruits, veggies, beans and whole grains and have lost a lot of weight.

As to your question about tofu, I use it as part of a meal about once or twice of week and usually combine it with veggies.

Hi 'Ur', Great news that you have become Veggie. I have been Vegetarian for 38 years (with some episodes as Vegan) and am currently around two stones overweight. As others have said Vegetarian doesn't necessarily equal weight loss or a healthy diet (I know some Vegans seem to live on fast food and coke-cola!).
You say you 'exercise often' but maybe you need to consider the type of exercise you are doing and the intensity to get the weight loss you desire.

I've been veggie for some 25 years and struggled for a long time with my weight - the same struggles I had when I ate meat. I eventually joined a diet club (Slimming World) which has helped enormously - I'm only just over half a stone over my ideal weight.

Much of it involves cutting down on bread and dairy products, but I'd definitely recommend going the diet club route, if your lifestyle and timetable allows. Just the idea of getting on the scales in front of an audience is enough to keep me on the straight and narrow a lot of the time!
