I'm not a huge reader, meaning in the past I've been a devoted reader but not read 50 plus books in a year.
I like to have something to read near me most of the time. But, rarely, I do seem to have lapses when I dont read anything for a month or so.
This year I thought it might be fun to track what I've read and I have a few goals in mind. My ever growing TBR pile is up to about 80 books so I thought a few goals might help eat into it. I'll also join challenges and group reads through the year as interesting ones come up.

Goals
A. Have a bit of fun with a "Titles Alphabet Challenge" (for some tongue-in-cheek fun :-)
B. To read from the 1001 list (set an easy goal of 10 books)
C.To read at least 5 classics.
D.To read from my TBR list on bookcrossing so I can share them by setting them free :-) (About 30 books)
E. To read from the prize winners and short-lists/long-lists(just a general goal at the moment)
F.Read 5 Australian novels.

Quite a few of the books I choose will be part of overlapping goals, I'm looking for that satisfying feeling of "Killing-two-birds-with-one-stone"

I'll be looking at updating this thread about once a month.

Kim, I'm happy to be able to follow your reading! Did you like The Well? Amanda sent it to me and I have not gotten to it yet. I just finished the forthcoming (new) Anne Michaels' novel. It was quite good, but I suspect not for everyone (very lyrical, mesmerizing but melancoly).

Wow, you've had an amazing month of reading, Kim! Of your January reads, I've read #s 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, and 11. Hard to pick a favorite of these, too! I've starred your thread for future reference.

avaland, I quite enjoyed The Well ...

Are you SURE you're not a 50 book a year reader? I know when I started keeping track of my reading a couple years ago I surprised myself. At the rate you're going, you could easily hit 75 or 100. Impressive list so far!

14KimB
jan 27, 2009, 4:40 pm

Thanks for your comments.

The Well was very evocative of country Australia, even though it would have been based on the other side of the continent. It was sent to me from my wishlist from a lady who had been taught by E. Jolley's daughter and knew of them both. She described them as an eccentric family. Funny thing is, that on weekends I used to stay with my Aunt on her farm (being a horse mad teenager) in the 1980s, learnt to drive on dirt roads (never at night!) and all the supporting character's in this book seemed familiar. stock-and-station agents, landholder neighbours that we would visit and have cups of tea with (the local large landholder's place was called "Manar", I aways thought of it a bit like "The Manor"). I hope my Aunt and I were nothing like the two main characters :-) I was certainly not an orphan who was raised by nuns! I've watched the first part of the film, very well done (slight pun intended), I hope to see the rest of the film now I've finished the book.

Embers is on the 1001 list, found it compelling reading, which surprised me because it only 2 old men talking by the fire about past events. It did feel very Hungarian. It is a very quick read and well worth the effort of finding a copy. I have a bookring running on bookcrossing, if you would like to join. http://www.bookcrossing.com/journal/6847753

#13. I hope I can keep up the pace but I suspect it was an anomaly.

Western Australia :-) I think she was probably somewhere near Perth

Being in the eastern part of the continent myself.

Darwin- I think I'd call that the Top End.

Cairns - Tropical North.

Would you recommend Ethan Frome?

20KimB
mar 1, 2009, 5:16 pm

I enjoyed good ol' Moll, but, for me, I think Ethan Frome is a better read. It is packed with quite a bit for such a slim read, only about 94 pages, from memory. It is available from Project Gutenburg, although I read a paperback copy. I would recommend Ethan Frome and I'm looking forward to reading at least 2 others of Wharton's The Age of Innocence and The House of Mirth at some stage.

Last book started in March

22KimB
Redigeret: maj 11, 2009, 9:29 pm

This is the summary of my reading that stretched from the end of March to early May.

33.Great Expectations by Charles Dickens (Read Mar-May)
34.Miles McGinty by Tom Gilling (Read Apr)
35.The Gift of Rain by Tan Twan Eng (Read Apr)
36.The List: A Love Story in 781 Chapters by Aneva Stout (Read Apr)
37.Asleep by Banana Yoshimoto (Read Apr)
38.A very good local novel that will be an LT surprise gift (Read Apr)

Of these I think that The Gift of Rain is the one that I would rate highest. Great Expectations seemed to not be a good choice for my night time reads the Dicken's language lulled me to sleep earlier than I would have wished so I didnt read as much over April.
Miles McGinty is a quaint little Australian historical novel.
Asleep was a good introduction to this author's work, I'll read Kitchen later in the year. The List was just quirky fun little chicklit, took about 30mins to read, glass of champagne in hand :-)

ETA - The local novel (I 'll reveal it later in the year) was enjoyable and has inspired me to look out for more local fiction.

25KimB
maj 22, 2009, 9:49 pm

I agree Amanda, not fun reads, but well written in a style I hadn't really come across before.
Just finished Falling Man, it's on the 2008 edition of the 1001 list. I think it is a worthy addition.
I got on the net to see if the performance artist mentioned in the book was purely a fictional character. It appears that he is fictional, but I found the photo called "The Falling Man" (at the time I refused to look at anything like that) and it is one of the most terrible and powerful images of our time.
I'm pleased I read the book and I would recommend it, but in the same breath, it is not a book for everyone.
Also, it is one of the few books that I really dont feel like giving a rating to.

July Reading Summary

54.Everymans Rules for Scientific Living by Carrie Tiffany
55.The Lost Dog by Michelle de Krester
56.Small Island by Andrea Levy
57.The Colour by Rose Tremain
58.Purple Hibiscus by Chimamada Ngozi Adichie
59.Bel Canto by Anne Patchett
60.To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Another amazing month of reading. I was reading mainly from those books listed for the Orange Prize, so all novels read were by women authors.
My favourite for the month would be a tie between Small Island and To Kill a Mocking Bird. Closely followed by Bel Canto. Purple Hibiscus was a hard to put down book.
Number 54 and 55 were two very good Australian Novels.
The Colour was a good read but the author did not know enough about NZ to make it a convincing historical fiction for me.

You have some interesting titles for July!

I am currently reading and enjoying Bel Canto. I am also going to keep watch for Small Island and Purple Hibiscus. I also want to read her other work Half of a Yellow Sun. Did you read that one?

Thanks for recommending Eucalyptus. I have it now, and will start it very soon.

August Reading Summary

61.The Bookseller of Kabul by Asne Seierstad (Read Aug)
62.Life a User's Manual by Georges Perec (Reading Aug)
63.Death in Venice by Thomas Mann (Read Aug)
64.The Blood of Flowers by Anita Amirrezvani (Read Aug)
65.Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson (Read Aug)
66.I'm not Scared by Niccolo Ammaniti (Read Aug)
67.Wanting by Richard Flanagan (Read Aug)

This month was a bit more "hit and miss" than last month. I picked up Life, a User's Manual and then kept getting distracted by all the other books that kept coming into the house. I'd say that The Blood of Flowers was the most enjoyable read this month, followed by Wanting. Three Cups of Tea is an amazing non-fiction account of a man who decided to sacrifice a lot to build a school in a remote part of Pakistan, and then he kept on going. I'm Not Scared was also a good quick read. I'd say my least favourite is a toss up between The bookseller of Kabul and Death in Venice. A non-fictional and a fictional account of two unattractive male personalities. At least the fictional account was well written. Maybe the non-fictional account suffered in the translation.

2009 - A Year of Reading - some thoughts

I’ve read mainly fiction this year, plus a few memoirs. After spending so much time on fiction I’m feeling the need to read more non-fiction, so I think I concentrate on that more next year. I’ve read almost half an’ half women and men authors.

Memoirs read in order of preference the first four were all very good:
I know Why the Caged Bird Sings
Charles Darwin : an Australian selection
Three Cups of Tea
Waking: A Memoir of Trauma and Transcendence
The Bookseller of Kabul

I think my global reading hasn’t been too badly distributed around the continents, but I should read more from south-east Asia. Though, I don’t think I’ll concentrate on that next year, it is something for future thought.
I’ve gone a bit outside my usual genres with varied reading from the 1001 list. Also, I’ve only been tracking my reading for the past couple of years and this year I’ve almost doubled what I’ve read in past years. I should finish with about 80 books read.
I’ve been trying to read more local literature and I’ve been really enjoying that. It’s very hard to find any novel set in Canberra, but I’ve found 4 this year; Smoke and Mirrors: A Brad Chen Novel, West Block, The Tazyrik year : a novel, and The Memory Room.

There are only a couple that I haven’t enjoyed, and they are mainly because the author has not been familiar enough with their subject and got easily discovered facts wrong. I think I take a perverse satisfaction from being very picky (changed from picking, I got it wrong, ironic huh ;-) with these books once I’ve discovered something blatantly incorrect.
There are only four books that have just got the details wrong -
The Colour, Scapegallows, The Memory Room and Life: A user’s Manual.
I tried to read some books online but it just wasn’t right for me, so I often didn’t manage to complete those books.
Most of the novels I’ve read this year are by authors that I hadn’t read before. Even of the ones that weren’t completely new to me, I’ve only read one other of their books: Ian McEwan, Peter Carey, Irène Némirovsky, Khaled Hosseini, Haruki Murakami, Mitch Albom and Chimamada Ngozi Adichie. However, I have read a few works by the same author this year. Examples would be Sarah Waters, Ian McEwan , Murray Bail and Rose Tramain.

Much of my reading was determined by the 1001 list, the booker prize, the miles franklin prize, the orange prize and by more than 30 bookcrossing bookrings arriving in the post. I tried to read the bookrings as they’ve come into the house, because they are owed to other people. So I’ve been following the crowd quite a bit and feeling quite good about it because I’ve come across more gems then duds. Even so, there are some in bold that I thought were really outstanding, not always because of the writing but by how much simple enjoyment I got from them.
