I'm almost through Emblems of Mind by Edward Rothstein and I find it an enormously enjoyable cross-reference between Music and Mathematics. Rothstein writes one solid chapter on each of the arts separately before launching into an incredible intelligent aesthetic discussion (Chapter titled "Theme and Variation") of our good old friends Beauty and Truth. He boldly colloquially articulate thoughts on philosophical ideas which for this reader felt like a breath of fresh air. The book first makes me want to read Mario Livio's The Golden Ratio; The Story of Phi, the World's Most Astonishing Number, then talk to a mathematician to unpack some of the elegance in the formula's Rothstein cites.
I'm also interested in Pythagoreanism. Anyone know of a good book about this? I'm assuming some threads through history of Pythagoras, alchemy, even free masonry have been written about. Meanwhile, anyone who'd like to comment on this book, let's get some ideas out.
