Books traded in

Being as this is a used book group, I'm wondering how many of you still list books in your library that you've traded in at used book stores. Right now, I do not list the books that I have traded in at the UBS.

Once the book is gone from my possession, it gets de-listed unless I lent it to someone else with the intent of having it returned or have it on a bookray/ring in which I am tracking the book (and basically controlling its movement until it gets either stalled or lost...at which time it gets de-listed).

Thanks for that, I'll take a look at that. I find it just amazing how much more helpful info. I've found out just be joining LT & some groups.

I only list books that I own. Whether I give a book away, trade it in, or whatever, once it's off my physical shelves (or off the piles on my floor!), it's deleted from my catalogue.

That's how I currently do my catalog, too. The BookCrossing site may be helpful to me for when I lend books to a friend; I need to browse the site some more, but it may be a useful tool for keeping track of loans & returns.

I haven't listed books that I had already gotten rid of when I started LT but if I do get rid of a book I just change the tag from own to NIL (Not In Library) so that I know I did read it and the rating it got. Saves me from accidentally picking the book up in the future and thinking it may be worth buying. Once I sell or get rid of a book it is gone for good. I do NOT rebuy books.

Jessa - that's a good idea, too. Can't tell you how many times I've picked up a book, only to realize I had already traded in another copy of it.

#6 - JBookLover, I like your 'NIL' idea a lot. I often read books that aren't it my library - whether I've traded or sold them on, got them from the library, or borrowed them friends. I can't find a way to write a review of a book on LT that's not in my library, so that might be the solution. Or is there a way to do it that I've missed? Anyone?

No, you haven't missed anything. You cannot, at present, post a review of a book that is not in your library.

I list them in my LT library because I've read them, but they are tagged with a sold. This helps me know I've read them, but they are no longer in my real library.

Question: I've seen a lot of tags with the "@" in front... is there a reason for that? What does it do?

I use '#', '_', and '@' as markers to help sort out my tag cloud to make things easier to find.

I started out listing only those books I owned. But then I bethought myself that this was my book collection and I should do what I felt was convenient for me. So I went back and marked all those few books I have sent out on PaperBackSwap and those books that were gifts to me. And I intend to tag other books as may be convenient.

By the way, I originally put comments in the comment field I felt were pertinent but to my consternation LT doesn't select on the comment field so for sorting comments are useless.

Individuals, I have also heard, put magazines, cds, dvds, and tapes in their book collection. I don't do that but it is, after all, an individual choice. The only problem with it that I see is that it throws the book count off.

I do. I catalog my collection as everything I've read so I know what not to buy/borrow in the future.

I list books that I own - but if I read a book and decide I no longer want to own it, I get rid of it and tag it "gone". I often write a review of it as well, so I can remember why I don't own it. Maybe I didn't like it. Or, it could still be quite a good book. One of my very favourites recently left my library forever in the hands of daughter #2, who lives in California and tells me she is giving it to daughter #1, who lives in Italy.

I only list books that I've read - the "my library" section has nothing to do with what I own.
Maybe not how you're supposed to do it (I didn't know!), but it's definitely what I prefer.

The only books that are in my catalog that I do not physically own are the ER books I have to keep with their reviews so the ER program will know that I have reviewed my books. They have a special tag "don't own anymore but have to keep in my library to keep the ER gods happy".

Other than those 5 books, I can put my hands on everything in my catalog.

There are quite a few threads that discuss this issue of what to include in your catalog, and everybody has their own way of using LT - that's the great thing about how Tim & Co have set LT up.

I own all the books listed in my catalogue. If I give any away, I remove them from the list.

Ah, physical possession is so over-rated. I use LT as a book journal and TBR list. I own perhaps 60% of my LT catalog.

It might be over-rated, but I love to own the books I read (and like). Matter of taste, I suppose.

My library contains books I own and books I don't. I just have them organized so I know what's what.

I tag my books "read" once I'm through. I used to keep all the read ones, but now I don't have the desire to dust that many so I usually just donate them to Goodwill and tag those as donated.

I joined LT as a way to keep up easily with what I have on hand which is usually between 300-400 AND to keep up with what I 've read and no longer have on hand. I was really getting frustrated winding up with duplicates. I have still, but thankfully only a few times, gotten in a hurry and snapped up a "deal of a book" and gotten home to find I have it already.

I don't hesitate to call and ask the bookseller if I can return it because I made a goof. I haven't had anyone turn me down, but I think most of the shops I go to know me well enough by now.

My big project for this year is to try and rememebr the hundred of books I read Pre LT and get those added in. I'm finding that's no easy task :)
