Well the next two weeks I will give you all a photo of Gladdich every day ;-)

Lets start with a photo from nearly two years back, when Gladdich was a little puppy:

2cynthiadogmom

Look at all that fur! I just want to rub my face all over him!

3maggie1944

a "little" puppy, eh? Very darling. One does want to just roll around on the carpet with him.

4phlegmmy

He's such a furball, every inch of him!! I love it.

I adore Gladdich's slightly grumpy look - and now I see it was there right from birth. Massive snuggles!

>2 cynthiadogmom: Cynthia, Gladdich loves attention, so he would like that
>3 maggie1944: Maggie yes, wee little puppy, 8 weeks he was back then, he is now a 27 kilo big boy
>4 phlegmmy: phlegmmy all fur, a big grey teddybear
>5 Booksloth: Booksloth, they are supposed to have a slightly grumpy look, it is called "scowl". The blue tongue and the scowl were supposed to keep bad spirits away

And here Gladdich at 3 months:

7phlegmmy

So along with two weeks of pictures, you'll give us intersting facts about Chows--yes? The scowl being a part of the breed is like the goofy smile being a part of the Bull Terriers, giving it a comical look. :-)

Ah-hem. Some of us who own the cutest dog ever would have to take exception to that, but he's definitely up there in the shortlist! (As is Casper. And my darling Skeelo.) FAM - how do you stop kissing him long enough to take photos?

But seriously, Chow Chows come from China and dogs are eaten there. But the myths that they were bred for food alone are not true. Chows were used for many things.

39maggie1944

A very noble face.

Regarding puppies, I must very respectfully and gently disagree about the cutest puppies in the entire world. Miniature schnauzers take the prize. I must find a picture and come back but I am packing for a trip so it'll be some other time. Trust me - schnauzers! Look them up....

Now I don't want to fan any flames , but there's a reason why lab puppies are used in so many ads! Though I'd have to add a vote for bearded collie pups too. Let's face it - all puppies are gorgeous.

I know, ALL puppies are cute ;-)
I am just a tad bit prejudiced... I tried to write carefully "chow pups seem to be the cutest". Too often they are the victem of people who buy them because they look little teddy bears and know nothing about the breed :-(

And of course Labs, Schnautzers, Scotties, Beardeds and (one of my other favourites) Kuvasz are oh so adorable when they are young.
But given the choice, I do prefer a grown dog over a cute puppie. The adult dog shows his true character. I am always happy when one of my own is grown up into a well behaving nice specimen of his breed.

46Booksloth
sep 8, 2008, 3:06 pm

I get that completely, FAMeulstee. I'm also a fan of the 'finished article' where dogs are concerned. Puppies are unbeatably cute but there's so much more to adult dogs than just 'cute'. In fact, I'm possibly even more passionate about old dogs. They've given so much and ask so little and frequently get very little too. If only I had the space and the money I'd gather up every senior in every rescue home in the world and give them a loved and pampered old-age. It simply breaks my heart when I hear of people who abandon a dog that's given a lifetime of love, just because they fancied a new puppy.

Thanks for all the wonderful Gladdich pics. He's a real star!

No photo of Gladdich today, but I wanted to tell you all Gladdich had surgery today.

In February he had torn the ligament in his right knee and had arthroscopic surgery at the end of that month.
Three weeks ago the ligament in his left knee was torn too, so today he had arthroscopic surgery again.

He is at home, whining a bit, from the anesthesia, but not as worse as last time. Now 6 weeks short walks (but often) and than slowly increasing...
His right knee is completely healed and back in shape, so we hope the result will be as good this time.

hi Booksloth

thanks for asking, it has been a bit of a bumpy road.

The first week and a half went very well, then one of the inside stitches started to bother Gladdich and he tried to get it out. We went to the vet and she pulled the stitch out. We treated the wound with honey-cream and it went slowly better again.
Last Monday we had an appointmet with the surgeon-vet who did the surgery. Two days before Gladdich started limping again and now he is back on antibiotics and painkillers, as there is an infection in his leg, luckely the knee is still stable.

And today I phoned the vet again, because he sleeps very much and is a bit desorientated (sp?) from time to time. The vet recommended to give half a dose of the painkiller, hoping that will help...

I will call the vet again tomorrow.

Gladdich update (thanks for asking Booksloth)

Yesterday he had his last antibiotica and it looks like the infection is gone.
We are still on many short walks a day and he is using his leg better. On december 8th we have the next appointmet with the orthopedic vet.

Chimay was getting bored by the short walks, so I take her three times a week alone for a very long walk, or with the bike. She appriciates my effords ;-)

Yesterday we had our appointment with the vet. She was pleased with the progress Gladdich made and agreed we stopped with the painkillers.
A week ago he started to react weird and anxious and we had the feeling it might be the painkillers.

We continue the short walks 4 or 5 times a day and gradually walk a bit further. It will take some months before he is completely back, but with small steps we will get there :-)

FAMeulstee - I'm so very sorry. Having a much-loved dog put to sleep is one of the most heartbreaking decisions we ever have to make but it is a testament to your love for Gladdich that you were able to do this final loving thing to save him further suffering. I hope you are allowing yourself to grieve properly for him and ignoring the kind of people who don't understand your love for 'just a dog'. We dog-lovers/owners know only too well how much a special dog becomes a member of the family and you have lost someone you love. He obviously had a huge fan base here on LT and, if it's possible, lots of us will be sharing, to a tiny extent, your loss. I do hope that is of some small consolation.

93valerie2
okt 9, 2009, 9:11 am

FAMeulstee you have my best wishes too - I know exactly what you're going through having had to put my beautiful Bonnie to sleep in June at the age of 17. I had wondered at the absence of Gladdich news, but given he'd seemed so well early in the year I hadn't anticipated that anything so sad had occurred. I've just looked back through the photos in this thread and have to say that, while they are all lovely, message no. 29 is my personal favourite. And what a way to remember him -as your caption says, being just happy! Has Chimay felt the loss?

I love your idea of a "heart dog" - I think that's what Bonnie was for me. While I'm now awaiting the arrival of my new pup later this year I really do believe that Bonnie will always be my "heart dog" (although I had never put it so beautifully). Maybe it has something to do with the phases of my life that she saw me through, as much as her wonderful spirit and personality.

It does help to ease the pain when others share it.
Luckely most people around us know he was not 'just a dog' to us. But anyhow it was a heartbreaking decision, he was so young...

>93 valerie2: valerie
We think he got backproblems after the last surgery. We had a litter in March and he really LOVED puppies, so he had a good time then.
But the pain got worse and he got aggresive. The last he did was attacking Chimay, she had over 30 bites all over her body, even though we got them separated fairly quick. So Chimay does not really miss him, Frank and I do...

It's bad enough to loose them at any age, but so young. My deepest sympathies.

thanks phlegmmy & BarkingMatt

It is the hardest thing to do, especially when it feels it is not their time yet, because of the age... but you know there is no other option left

Anita, I'm going to share with you something one of my horse friends wrote when another one of our friends was having to make this decision. I share it with people all of the time because it truly says it best.

"I always weigh these decisions against the quality of their life and the four-legged in question. If I think they are "surviving" to make me happy, I'll have a long talk with the vet about what is really going on. Some of them do that, through their sheer devotion. If I know they are really fighting, its not time. If it's just to please me, it is time, and time for me to bear the hard moment.

I would much rather have to euthanize one of my beloved animals in a moment of peace -- *I* am the one gifted with the sense of the future, time is a human construct, and I do see this as one of the responsibilities I have towards my four-legged companions -- than let it happen in a moment of crisis, when all they seek is relief from the agony.

The decision, or worse, the act, is never easy. The only advice I can give is to weigh the quality of life - taking into account what you know of the individual involved, taking into account the counsel of your vet as to outcome, take into account your own spiritual beliefs - and act accordingly."

Many, many hugs to you and all who loved Gladdich. It may not feel like you made the right decision, but if you think about the pain he might have been enduring to make him turn aggressive towards Chimay, well I think you will find your answer there. If you released him from his pain, you gave him a gift of love.

I had never seen the pictures until today, being new to this group. You have the most beautiful chows I have ever seen. You must groom them all the time!

I love your title of "heart dog." That is a perfect description.

I'm sorry for your loss and I'll be thinking of you. *hugs*

>99 phlegmmy:: thank you phlegmmy for your thoughtfull post.
Sometimes it is good to reflect this way. A heartfelt thank you!

>100 lefty33: thank you too lefty
No, I don't groom much, I have smooth Chow Chows, the shorter haired version ;-) They are not so wide known as the rough (longhaired) Chow Chows, but they need much less grooming. Their coat is a bit like an Akita or Shiba Inu, only requiring some brushing and combing when they shed.

thanks Carrie

I was a bit behind too...
Yes the furry family are the special ones. But their lives are too short, sometimes even shorter :-(
