Anyone read horror magazines or e-zines on a regular basis?

Just curious.

Rue Morgue!

I read Rue Morgue every once in a while.... I usually only go out of my way to get the Halloween special issues, but I really like their reviews.

For horror fiction, about the only magazine I still read regularly is CEMETERY DANCE. (I lament the passing of the days when TWILIGHT ZONE MAGAZINE, NIGHT CRY, THE HORROR SHOW, WHISPERS, ELDRITCH TALES, and WEIRDBOOK, were around).

I would be interested in hearing about any good horror e-zines.

Some film-related horror magazines that I still get are VIDEO WATCHDOG, MIDNIGHT MARQUEE, VIDEOSCOPE, and Steve Puchalski's incredible SHOCK CINEMA (and here I must lament the passing of Mike Weldon's indispensable PSYCHOTRONIC mag, CASTLE OF FRANKENSTEIN, THE MONSTER TIMES, and of course Uncle Forry's original FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND).

Fangoria. I used to buy and collect issues of Fangoria.
In fact I still own all the ones I ever bought.

How is Fangoria? I'm tempted to look at it, but I fear its tone might be too juvenile. (The same reason I buy Mad only once every three years.)

I should have pointed out earlier that Rue Morgue's book section editor is an LT member and author:

I'm not even sure it is still being Published today. I liked it alright. I don't think you can ever outgrow the Mad books and Spy Vs. Spy. Fangoria used ti have a lot of interviews and behind the scene stuff like the magazine the Sci-Fi Channel used to publish every month. It would talk about upcoming books and movies that sort of thing. It did have great color glossy photos.

Fangoria's still going I believe. I used to love it too but not so much now. It seems to focus on low budget splatter movies or the current hollywood flavour of the month. Not for me I'm afraid.

Working at a bookstore has pretty much 'cured' me of any interest in magazines, though I'm thinking of collecting back issues of Heavy Metal (though I guess that's more sci-fi than horror...)

I try to pick up most anything horror-related that I can find.
The magazines Ive been reading when I can find them are:

Rue-Morgue
Fangoria
GoreZone
Cemetery Dance
Cryptic
HorrorHound
Screem
City Slab
Dark Wisdom
Red Scream
Black October

and occasionally Apex Digest

I like Fangoria. The images are fantastic and they do a decent job of covering a lot of aspects of horror. Movies are their main focus, but there is a lot of coverage of books and even video games (for example Clive Barker's game Jericho).

What country gives up Apex? I've never seen it on a newsstand here in the Mid-Atlantic US.

Venerable MIDNIGHT MARQUEE magazine recently dropped their paper-based publication in favor of a free (they accept donations, though) digital download. It's in .pdf format, and can be printed out. You can find it here:

I used to love Rue-Morgue, but it's been years since I saw an issue. I didn't even know they were still around...

Rue Morgue is great (he says again . . . )! They put out a weekly podcast--Rue Morgue Radio--full of music (some great tunes to be found, plus a steaming load of Misfits clones), with some interviews and reviews that's definitely worth catching.

69 Flavors of Paranoia Magazine is back from the grave.

Next month a little boy's terror of a worn-out fashion mannequin called Maryanne is on the menu. It's guaranteed to leave an unsettled lump in the pit of your stomach.

I'm a big fan of Cemetery Dance, basically it's short Horror fiction, my only problem is the magazine gets published pretty sporadically, so I'll end up missing issues or not seeing a new one for a couple months.

I tried Fangoria, but it's the stories I like the best, rather than the gore pics from upcomming films.

I think the future is online now just for that very reason. The overhead of running a paper magazine is huge and readership is pretty low. I was reading a prominent horror pulp mag the other day -- well, trying to read -- and I was amazed that they are still in business.

Each story was written in present tense and all I could think of was Bart Simpson going on about, "Well, I says to Myrtle, you see that over there..."

A good place to find the latest horror mags is at Duotrope. They're a writer resource but you can specify what you're looking for (horror) and find gems you never knew existed.

*edit: damned link!

#18 - Wow - what a neat resource, thanks for pointing Duotrope out!
