Type: Fiction, YA, Earth
Plot: There are several books and each book has unique stories on how individuals end up taking over the position of deities - I think one was by accident I know one was Death, the Devil, and Time, maybe the Fates, and the final book is about a woman becoming God.
Date when written: I'm not 100% but I think the series was written in the 80's/90's
Additional information:
The books aren't notably large I think - they'll YA 'normal' book lengths.
The rough summary of the series involves the fact that the deities had all been human at one point, and eventually get replaced by other humans (or they select one when they're tired). Each book does cover several deities getting replaced and how they do it, and I believe the guy that takes over for the devil interacts with a lot of them through the series of books. The over all story has something to do with him actually trying to save everyone because the deity for god had pretty much clocked out or fell asleep (or something), leaving all so locked out of heave and stuck in limbo or Hell. The final book involves him assisting a woman in taking over as the new god, and has some end of 'fate' along the lines 'and so the devil and God embraced'
