BOOK # 107

On That Day by William Arkin

This is an intense description not only of what occurred both leading up to the actual planes hitting the NY twin towers, but the details of those who took over the planes when and how.

It was difficult to read at times because of the intensity. In addition to the description of the event, there were numerous details of when our government was inadept, including the fact that the President of the United States was without security immediately after the bombings.

There were errors of miscommunications of the flight numbers and where they might have been headed.

Despite the millions spent in a plan in the event something like these bombings would occur, few plans were followed through.

What a mess!!!!!

Thanks to all! I apologize for not responding individually. I am very tired. In addition to the news of a bit of delay for the stage two of the infusion pump surgery, sadly, one of Will's beloved cousin died.

Throughout the years, we had such fun with Bill. We went on a cruise with him and family members. In the hospital, when Will was depressed after his open heart surgery, I asked him to remember a happy event. He mentioned the cruise, and one night in particular when Will, his cousin Bill and I sat in chairs at the bow of the ship. The sky was beautiful with brightly lit stars. Will said "This is what heaven is like!"

My personal spiritual belief is that Will and Bill's mother (Will's special Aunt Phyllis) and
Bill's father, greeted Bill when he transitioned from this world to the next. Because Bill's death was unexpected with complications from surgery, the family is reeling with extra grief.

There is also a lot of dysfunction with Bill's soon- to- be divorced wife. As usual, there was/is always drama with his wife. Now, not only does the family have this unexpected tragedy, but in addition, she did not allow anyone to talk to him in the hospital before his death. And, as he was dying, the family was denied any information. There could have been some closure, now, only added pain.

I swear, I will never understand ugly actions when it could/should have been so very different. The wife will have her own service, and none of us will be informed or allowed to attend.

Unfortunately, part two of the pain management surgery, cannot occur until the insurance company authorizes it. The director of the center noted that he allows a two-week time frame. If he hasn't heard in that period, he will directly call my insurance to make sure his paperwork isn't sitting on a desk.

Incredible, insightful, mind expanding, and glad I read this one! There are so many thoughts that Sagan posits. Is there life on other planets? Is there a connection between a God/Being who made this universe? Are science and religion connected?

>36 bell7: Hi Mary. I hope all is well with you. I may have misunderstood, though I am a good listener. I liked the director of the pain management center a lot. He took more than an hour to explain the procedure that he has in place to ensure that the right medications will go into the pump. He understood the depth of my pain, and said that the insurance company will certainly approve the procedure. After nine surgeries, they might be willing to ensure that there won't be any more after this one.

The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women by Kate Moore

Life was good for the women who worked at the factory where their job was to paint the dials on watches used primarily in WWI so that the soldiers could see the dials light up.

Salaries were good for the women who worked with the chemical radium. There was a process. Dipping the brush into the radium compound and placing it in their mouths produced a faster way in which they could paint many, thus piece work compounded their take home pay.

Life and salaries were good, until one by one, teeth fell out, parts of their jaws were lose and then became unattached.
Other serious issues such as black spots, huge cancerous masses and tumors that made it impossible to walk, to work, to survive.

When the companies hiring the radium girls knew all along that radium was a radioactive compound which could and did produce high levels of cancer at various places in their bodies, they denied any knowledge of this.

Fighting all the law suits, they had the rich and intelligent lawyers to overcome the stories of the girls and what was happening to them.

While reading this story of the greed of capitalism at the cost of lives lost, I thought of the Sacklers of today who knew their miracle drug oxycontin was addictive, they pushed this drug to the harm of thousands upon thousands.

To this day, they fight law suites. Most recently, they won another case.

BOOK # 110

Seeds of Freedom, The Peaceful Integration of Huntsville, Alabama written by Hester Bass Illustrations byE.B. Lewis

This is one of the best illustrated books I've read regarding the Civil Rights movement in the United States. The writing is lovely, with powerful phrases that are repeated for effect.

While Birmingham, Alabama was notorious as the most hatefilled stated, nicknamed "Bombingham, Alabama," Huntsville peacefully integrated their schools, and signs were taken down regarding "Whites Only."

After reading many books regarding the civil rights movement, I discovered something new. Black people were not allowed to try on shoes. They had to bring a paper cut out of their feet for the size of the shoe.

Huntsville, was home of the space program. Known as the "Space Center of the Universe," Rockets built to transport people to the moon, were built along side cotton fields.
There were tests of students sitting in seats at lunch counters, but unlike other cities, when arrests occurred, the signs of protest signs said "I ordered a Hamburger, The serve me a warrant!" Seeds of freedom were planted.

Martin Luther King spoke in Huntsville, but it was not reported in the newspapers. The seeds of freedom needed attention to grow.

Easter time was a booming sales time for stores. When non whites refused to buy their Easter finery at the stores, it was an incredible financial blow.

Instead of pretty dresses, and fine suits, the non white people decided to go to church in jeans. This was known as Blue Jean Sunday.

When the notorious hate filled governor George Wallace, mandated that whites and blacks be separated everywhere, the black members of Huntsville, decided to spend the day in the all white park. The children slid down the slides, and they rode on the Merry-Go Round!

The people had a different message than that of hate. Filling balloons as they rode in the front of the court house and released the balloons that carried a message inside. "Please support freedom in Huntsville!!!!"

Huntsville is a prosperous, proud and peaceful place Thus the mayor advocated for freedom and peace. President Kennedy visited Huntsville to advocate for freedom. Knowing that a great deal of money was at stake, he knew that if Huntsville was known as a hateful city, the government might not want to fund the space program.

Four black Huntsville families advocate for the right for their children to go to schools where white student attend. Four students went into the white school. As the hands reach the doors, they feel no movement of opening. The doors are locked.

Then, a miracle occurs, across town, a private religious school with all black students, welcome whites Twelve white students enter a door that is unlocked! This action became known as the
reverse integration in Huntsville schools.

I re read this book three times. The power of the writing and the events that occurred peacefully in Huntsville, seemed to sprout seeds of freedom.

There was no Bull Connor spewing hatefilled bigotry. There were no German Shepard dogs biting children who were plastered with hoses of water that splayed the children against the walls of buildings.

In Huntsville, seeds were planted, and they grew!

BOOK #111

Rocket Men: The Daring Odyssey of Apollo 8 and the Astronauts Who Made Man's First Journey to the Moon by Robert Kurson

One of the best books read thus far in 2021, this is the story of three very brave men who were chosen among NASA's elite. In December 1968 NASA astronauts Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders were all exceedingly smart, very well competent, and each had a strong history of flight.

Traveling from earth in December of 1968 to the moon, making many successful spins around, and back again to earth, this remarkable journey was in fact a miracle of hope, and success. Some tests before the launching were fraught with errors. Tremendously well planned, the computer systems then were certainly nothing in comparison of today. Yet, they were successful.

History shows that the year of 1968 was one of sadness and chaos. Both Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy were killed that year. The Democratic National convention hall was surrounded with protests, primarily regarding the horror of the Viet Nam war.
President Lyndon Johnson promised a fast conclusion to the war. As the body count grew, and the nightly news read numbers from a lottery choosing who would be the next to risk their lives in a country where many knew we did not belong, a country sick and tired of war held LBJ accountable for the disaster.

The nation needed something good to hold on to. Apollo 8 provided that!

A beautiful reading from the bible from Genesis on Christmas Eve brought tears not only to Americans listening, but to the scientists and all those who, despite all the odds, made this journey successful. With this mission, we beat the Russians to the moon, and, this successful mission brought images of the moon's craters highlighting where a mission of a next team could be successful in landing a man on the moon.

Reading this well into the evening, it is a wonderfully written, well researched book of early space exploration and the success of bringing hope to a weary United States.

Highly recommended.

BOOK #113

The Ones We Choose by Julie Clark

A fast read that focused on genetics and the mystery it holds. Paige has a child via a sperm donor. Her son Miles never fits in.
Not knowing who is "real" father is presents many psychological problems for Miles.

Touching upon the problems that may result from sperm donation, and the resulting unknown DNA problems that can result.

A quick, worthwhile read. The book held interest to me. I am the mother of a 39 year old child who who was adopted when she was two.

Five years ago, she developed thyroid cancer, and survived. I never knew that she carried such problematic feelings about her "real" mother. Her statement that she developed cancer because her mother didn't take care of her when she was a baby, and she was malnourished, led me to know that she harbors a lot of questions.

I offered to help her locate her biological mother, she refused. We were able to talk and sort through a lot of her feelings, including the fact that because she does not know her gene pool she will always blame "them" when she has serious health issues.

BOOK 114

Wishful Drinking by Carrie Fisher

A child of two previous super stars, her mother was Debbie Reynolds, perhaps not known to people younger than me, and a father who was a cheater with a decent voice.

Her parents, particularly her mother, best know for the movie Singing in the Rain with Gene Kelley, her father not really a big star, most famous for cheating on Debbie Reynolds and marrying Elizabeth Taylor. That was a very short run of a marriage.

She loved her funny mother, it is clear that there are lots of hard, difficult feelings for a father who perhaps saw her and her brother once a year.

A self admitted drunk and drug addicted person, the book is filled with funny versions of hard falls which she puts a silly spin on them.

She draws a diagram of the marriages, the divorces, who married and divorced whom, and all in all it is sad, though she tries to make a joke of it all.

I found it sad story told by someone who tried to rise above, yet never did, even though she is most known for her role in the well known Star Wars movie.

>70 Whisper1: Carrie Fisher was a brave strong funny woman and a terrific writer. We saw her do a Broadway show based mostly on Wishful Drinking But you laugh and then go out of the theatre sad.

Understanding how the game is played in Hollywood is not the same thing as winning the game. Sometimes alas self knowledge isn't enough.

Her book Postcards from the Edge also has the mix of funny and sad about her early life as "Hollywood Royalty".

BOOK #115

Ninety-Nine Glimpses of Princess Margaret by Craig Brown

If you ever slowed your car on a major highway to see the accident that caused the delay, then you will know what it is like reading this incredibly boring, bitchy book!

After watching the portrayal of Princes Margaret on the well-known series The Crown, this book caught my eye on a sale table. The author depicts an in-depth portrayal of a tragic life of a sad, perhaps mentally ill second best princess. Missing the inheritance of becoming the queen of England by a few short years, she watched jealously as her sister held the coveted position.

This framed the rest of her entire life Self absorbed, nasty to the point of severe rudeness, she spent her life demanding attention. A rude guest of those who made the mistake of accommodating her in their homes, all too soon, people grew to despise her nastiness, her curtness, and her demand for attention.

Rude to the point where people felt like slapping her, she lived off the poor people of England who could barely put food on their tables. She was a good case for why it is time to dismantle the way too old system of bowing down to those who least deserve to draw the blood off others.

Not worth reading! I cannot recommend it. As I read it, I thought I really should have put it down!

It's easy to bitch slap Princess Margaret - but I don't think that's the whole story.

We haven't looked at much of "The Crown" perhaps we should give it a try.

Perhaps someone else will come along to tell her tale with more sympathy.

Some is embellished, but the good thing about novelized books or movies is that they pull us into the story and want us to learn more.
>81 magicians_nephew: Hi Chelli! I like your comment that Margaret really didn't know what to do with herself. Perhaps instead of closets of Dior dresses, she might have given to the poor.

I hope to hear from the hospital pain management office tomorrow. I heard that instead of medication that they needed, it was a tiny plastic piece of tubing, which when the nurse was putting all things together for the phase two stage wherein I receive a spinal tap allowing the incision to be inserted into the spine. I will have a pump, but it won't be outside, for the trial it is tapped to my back. Each day I return to see how I am doing and if the medications need adjusting. I go back to the hospital for five days when they monitor how much medication that was used, and if I need more, or different medication other than morphine.

The nurse who called me was very much a patient advocate. They had the tubing, but it was expired. The hospital looked at their supply to discover all departments had expired tubing. The manufacturer went out of business. She found a new manufacturer and believes it should arrive tomorrow, November. If so, I start the process on Tuesday.

This is like a soap opera story. As my pain increases, I truly am running out of patience. When the process starts, I will take 1/2 of the current medication so there is not an overdose.

I am ready to get this going!

BOOK #116

Katherine of Aragon the True Queen by Alison Weir

Katherine did not bring a male heir to Henry, four babies were born, and shortly after breathing, they died. Of those babies, three were teeny males.

When a child was born and survived, and thrived, her name was Mary. Henry VIII celebrated this life because Katherine was still relatively young, and Henry believed a male baby was soon to follow.

Alas, that never happened. Despite Henry's frequent visits to Katherine's bed, she never became pregnant again. At 39, she entered menopause and the hopes were forever dashed.

This tragedy lead to the end of hope, and the eventually death of Katherine. A sassy young women by the name of Anne Boleyn, who was a lady in Katherine's retinue, caught the eye of Henry. His obsession with obtaining a male heir, lead to the change of the Catholic reign in England, tearing the country apart with the teachings of Martin Luther and the embracement of protestant teachings. A long battle ensued as Henry declared himself the supreme head of religion in England., tearing the country apart with the aim of marrying Anne.

Katherine came to England to be wedded to Henry's brother Arthur. Sickly, scrawny, and hacking to an end of death, Henry VII denied Katherine's ability to go back to Spain. He placed her in a cold castle with little company, the inability to pay for her staff, and measly cold plates of a few pieces of fruit and left over broth. Demanding the second portion of her dowry, Henry was brutal as Katherine's father in Spain refused to hand over another large portion of money.

When Henry VII died, when old enough, his son Henry VIII claimed Katherine as his prize. They spent years in a very solid marriage consisting of two like minded intellectuals bound together in love. Then, so very sadly, it ended as Henry grew more and more dissatisfied. He produced a male child with a woman at court, and Bessie Blout was married off to another, supported by Henry, who could not make the baby his heir, but he could tout that he was able to produce a son.

As Anne Boleyn, young and comely, promised what Katherine could not deliver -- a male heir. Off to a bitter cold castle for Katherine where she died broken hearted. Her punishment was that she never again saw her beloved Mary. She died from what historians now believe as cancer. A heart wrenching letter to Henry was delivered wherein she wrote she would always love Henry, and would pray for his sins.

Alison Weir wrote an excellent telling of court intrigue, a wonderful Catholic woman who was devoted to Henry, after the tempest tossed hell of waiting for years for a solution to severe mistreatment, and her demise because of something she could not control.

When Henry VII died, his son Henry VIII claimed Katherine as his prize.

The story of Katherine is sad and tragic.

I've read many books about Henry and all his six wives. Katherine is the one who haunts me.

In slowly sorting through piles and piles of books, I discovered that I have enough books about Henry and his wives to fill an entire book case.

>102 Whisper1: I found it interesting that some modern scholarship has reviewed the accounts and budget of Katherine of Aragon's final years and come to the conclusion that Henry VIII supplied quite enough in funds, but that the people around her siphoned too much of it into their own pockets. In his later years he might have shorted her, but that aspect of her troubles was due more to lax oversight than malice. Which is equally evil really, because she was his responsibility.

GREAT NEWS

The infusion tubing arrived today. The nurse called right away. The date for the first day of the trial will occur November 29th.
Every day for that week, I will go back to the hospital when various dosages and types of pain medications will be placed in a temporary infusion pump. At the end of the week, we should have a definite telling of which medication and the dosage will be determined to be used in the permanent infusion pump.

A small incision will open the lower part of my spine where the tubing will be placed which will deliver medications from the temporary pump. I'll need transportation for each of the five days that I need to return to the hospital. At the end of the week, we will know when the surgery will occur for the permanent infusion pump.

I am almost afraid to believe that finally after such a long wait, this will actually occur.

Counting the days until November 29th.

There are some good books about Henry VII Henry VIII's father. The new dynasty was not that secure on the throne so having a male heir and continuity was desperately important to avoid ANOTHER round of civil war.

I've read about Katherine's finances and who did what to whom. Agree that it was up to Henry and his men to sort this out - but they didn't.

Thank you to all for posting. Please forgive my inability to send personal messages at this time. As the pain increases, I simply cannot wait until Monday.

I joined the 75 challenge, never knowing it would bring such tremendous friends, who since 2008 would sustain me through surgeries, Will's passing, the loss of a beloved pet, and now my tenth procedure/surgery to test the infusion pump and the drugs placed therein, and the permanent surgery to place an infusion pump in my abdomen with tubing into my spine.

Thank you is not enough to express all we have been through together, supporting each other along the way, with events such as, HEALTH ISSUES, LOSSES OF PETS, PASSSING OF BELOVED FRIENDS AND FAMILY, BIRTH OF CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDEN, PERIODIC FRUSTRATIONS, AND THEN, OF COURSE THE SHARING OF BOOKS WE READ.

There were tremendous joys we shared as well as sorrows. I am so very blessed.

Much love and joy to all.

What Really Happened John Edwards, Our Daughter, and Me by Rielle Hunter

This was not worth the time spent reading, and not worth a review. Suffice it to say the .35 cents I paid for the book at a library sale table, was too much.

Her writing was terrible, and self absorbed. Really, who cares what she ate where? Selfish, defensive and totally out of touch with how she with a selfish politician did was amazingly ugly!

BOOK # 118

Hitler's Last Days by Bill O'Reilly

As mentioned previously, I do not care for Bill O'Reilly and his bombastic personality, but I do like some of his books, and this is one of them.

While my partner Will had two Uncles who face terrible travesties during WWII, I did not understand the geography of Europe and the sheer horror of the battles he instigated.

This is an accounting of his various missions, and the fighting of countries who tried desperately to stop him. As I listened to Will's Uncles, I always had the through that while this incredible demon killed so very many, not only Jews, but any group he deemed unworthy, in the end he was a coward who could not face what he did, and killed himself.

This is a chronicle of some of the missions throughout Europe that the US military succeeded in stopping him, and also those that sadly, were not successful.

Primarily, it focused on Hitler, those who surrounded him, and the terror together these retched people provoked.

I did not know that even as the Russians were approaching his bunker, he still believed he could win. Not surprised, but incredibly saddened, to the end, there were some who ran the concentration camp who fled, and others who killed all the remaining in the camp.

Thanks to all. It's been a long week.

They surgery surgery to implant a temporary pump with a lead directly from my spine was painful, AND productive. I was wide awake for the procedure. Yikes, it hurt like what I would image a hive of bee stings. I asked the nurses if people pass out, and they laughed and said usually the big guys with many tattoos.

They set the dose of medication into the pump, and showed my granddaughter what to look if by chance it stopped. Fortunately, the green light on the device that was fed from my spine round to my side where the pump was placed in a pouch, worked as it should. It did not beep at all.

The rest of the week, grand daughter Kayla took me to the hospital each day for a few hours when they checked the pump, the amount of medication I used, and then doubled the dosage.

The day after the surgery, I noticed a lessening of pain. By today, when they removed the pump, I only had a small amount of pain! It felt like a miracle to go from level nine pain down to level one.

The only side effect was itching an a rash on my arms and legs, but it was tolerable. Mid week, Kayla changed the bandages and all was fine.

I am happy to say I am a candidate for the permanent infusion pump. Before I left the hospital, the surgeon entered all data into the computer, and sent a message to the neurosurgeon who will perform the surgery (under sedation.) I'll be in the hospital overnight and can go home the next day. The neurosurgeon's office called, and by the time I got home they submitted everything to my insurance and told me their experience shows that since I had such positive results, the insurance will cover the surgery.

They will call Monday believing they will hear from the insurance, and depending upon the surgeon's calendar, I may have the surgery a few days after Christmas!

Until the surgery, I will go back to the oral medication. I will experience the wicked pain again until the surgery. But, I am ok with that knowing that the direction is forward. The pump actually contains a mini computer that reads the amount of medication used, and can show the time of day when my body calls for increased dosage. It will indicate when it is time to be refilled. The refill most likely will be needed every two months, and will be done via a needle into my abdomen that will carry the medication directly into the pump.

I'm tired, emotionally and physically drained. God Bless Kayla, she took the job seriously and now she too is worn out.

The results were better than the surgeon and nurses thought they would be, and were amazed that after the first day, and every succeeding day, my body worked with the pump, and reacted right away to provide pain relief.

Again, thank all for walking this journey with me

Shetland Sheep dog Lilly is nine years old. I never tripped over her, until the day after the surgery

She's been agitated knowing something is different. I did not know Lilly was plastered right behind me. I turned, tripped and did a face plant.

No harm was done to the pump, I have bruising, but it could have been a lot worse

I feel like a little ole lady tripping over her dog! But, I am so excited about the certifiable easement of pain, that if I could, I would dance!

Linda, this is such good news (except for the trip!) *Right after Christmas* is not that far off so keep that focus and know that you will enter 2022 almost a new person!

I hope your bruising goes away quickly, too. And know that Lilly just wants to be sure she can see you and be at your side.

xoxo

Oh Linda, my dear - SUCH WONDERFULNEWS!!!!! I'm shouting for joy! I do so look forward to your future life not ruled by pain.
Sorry about your run-over Lilly. You've been conscientious for it not to have happened before. Our pets like to be close, and we're not equipped to avoid them when we're tired or hurting except by being careful.
You rest. Kayla rest. Lilly rest.

My friend, I am so relieved to know that the end of your vicious pain is in sight!! I understand the dread of having it return after the test but knowing that a permanent solution is within weeks of happening, my heart sings for you! Think of all the wonderful activities you will be able to undertake in 2022!

If only you could have had this solution years earlier. I will thank God for finding this procedure and moving you forward to a pain-free existence.
