What to do when a book's title changes between hardback and paperback?

Paul Levine has written a series of books about Jake Lassiter. I was trying to figure out where the book I own fits into the series, and noticed that there are two books both numbered 5: Slashback and Riptide. The series as listed on Amazon doesn't list Slashback at all, but I found on the author's own website (https://paul-levine.com/jake-lassiter-series/) that he lists the book as Riptide, with a notation that it was published in hardcover as Slashback.

Slashback is in the libraries of 44 LT members, while Riptide is in 50 LT libraries. I originally just wanted to clean up the series order, but now I'm wondering if these two books should be combined? There's nothing on the author's website to indicate that the content differs at all.

Thanks for whatever advice you can give me. As it happens, the book I own is neither of these, so chalk this up to falling down the usual LT rabbit hold. :)

Yes, they should be combined. Also enter original title and other title in CK as well as a disambiguation note that combiners will see.

There are frequently title changes between hardback and paperback editions, between US and UK editions. Just part of publishers trying to make life hard for us.

ETA I just marked Bum Luck as Jake Lassiter (12). Speaking of rabbit holes. Also combined two other works that came up in the search for Bum Luck. And Cheater's Game is 14. The right Cheater's Game.

Ah, thanks for that! I hadn't gotten as far as looking for the two missing ones so I appreciate your doing that.

OK, I'll combine the other two and add a disambig notice.

It was easy because you included the link to the author's website. 14 just came out last month.

It takes a village! I think this is done, so the only question that remains is: Am I willing to track down the first 10 books in the series before I read the 11th book, which is the one I own?

The review on Bum Luck seems to indicate that they can be read separately. See also the reviews for your book. I'd go for it.
