This book is an older read. Not by Peter Beagle. Boy finds unicorn. They are in grocery store fighting against a flood. Finds a girl, they both keep unicorn alive then it has a baby.

Ariel by Steven Boyett (1983) features a boy and an injured unicorn in a post-apocalyptic city. No idea if it matches your details, though.
